Question about a 71 Yamaha AT1 was created by Tomoko
I purchased this 1971 Yamaha AT-1 125 from a sheriff in a neighboring city for $400 it had compression but the Points where missing and it needed a carb rebuild. I got all of it fixed and i road it but noticed it was sucking air like crazy. I tore it down and low and behold it had a blown out crank seal. I got it all straight with new seals. Put new rings in it. Got it all put back together and it runs pretty good.
I was curious. Did I over pay for this bike?
A little side note. I bought new clutch plates, a clutch cable (old one snapped while I was riding it) brand new clutch and brake leavers. I also got a brand new seat cover for it. As well as a luggage rack (mainly because why not and it was a steal) all in all I paid 400 for it and put in around 150 ish. Into it.
It still needs new tires. And brake shoes but I'm not sure if it's all going to be worth it in the end. I've been given wildly different value ranges from 300 bucks to 1500 bucks lol I have no clue what this thing might be worth.
The exhaust situation is temporary it has a muffler from different bike rigged up on it to keep the noise down as our neighbors are crazy and like to call the cops for any reason.
I guess the whole point to this whole thread is. What's this guy worth and does anyone know what kind of tires this bike uses...the tires on it are worn off and nothing is visible on the side where the type is usually printed..I should also point out that it's not missing the oil injection tank or the tool box both of those are set aside and drying. I had them painted in the original colors

I'd say you did well, even though the crank seal needed doing
. Exhaust will cost if you can find one & probably right up to AT3 [1973] will interchange except for one mount, i think someone said once. My AT1 is magneto kick only but looks like 90% of the US ones are electric. I see a Yamy quad [Kodiak?]in the background--sold mine a little while ago. I'm in NZ & welcome if you're new. Did you need a new battery too, as usually don't last well if left unused for a long time. Anyway, you did well, & another one saved.

Depends on where you are, in California that would be considered a good deal if it has a title. Good running condition I'd guess it's worth around 1200 as cosmetics look pretty good, minimal rust ast least in the photos, has the low front fender. Shinko 241 is the budget tire of choice and looks pretty close to original. Brake shoes are cheap, certainly swap those out as the originals can delaminate and cause a wreck. That bike is the same size frame as the 175cc bikes so you can go off the master tire thread and see what sizes suit your fancy.

I failed to mention that cleaned the magneeto and all those connections in it. The electric start spins over but mine is kind of fussy. it will spin over but it won't start cold. Even in choke. it will start up first kick every time but won't start up with the push button.
Now after 20 minutes or riding. And you kill it. It will start right up with the push button. But not after it sits for a long time.
I found a battery I had lying around in our shop. I said I did all the work but really this was a father / son kind of deal. Dad really helped me get it going. he's seriously a wizard when it comes to stuff like this.
I'm not sure if riding the bike charges the battery on mine but I keep it on a charger once a week or so.
Today we had a wiring harness issue. One of the previous owners rigged up some wiring and did a horrible job. We went through it and rewired most of the important stuff and put a new fuse in it.
our neutral indicater wire came undone and are looking for a replacement online.
I'm fairly young (24) I don't know much about these old bikes but when I brought it home my dad lit up like a kid in a candy store. Dropped everything he was doing (sanding his 69 Camaro down) and just spent the whole weekend with me fixing it.
I've come to really appreciate these old bikes
Funny story. my brother found a 1972 AT-1 for sale on Craigslist for $100! Literally a week after I brought mine home! It was left outside and the owner was burning leaves under it when he got to it. Took it home and man. He FIXED IT UP, it looks very good. Better than mine. We have a little community down here where we ride up to our local diner once a week. With some friends.
I still need blinkers and a new title. But it's such a small time town everyone knows everyone. The cops are super chill. Never got any hassle for not having tags on it. I obviously need to get that done but 1 step at a time i suppose !

Dude thanks a million for the info!
We painted the fenders using the original paints.
And painted part of the frame after sand blasting major rust zones. We still plan to eventually tear it all down and fully properly clean it up. But that will be much later.
I'll definitely buy those tires you suggested! Thanks!

Take another look at that master tire thread; I just posted three more styles for the AT-1 bikes.

If you don't have a title for it, google Vermont Motorcycle Title and you'll find some good links on a way to eventually get a title/registration in your state for under the cost of most titling companies.

A sheriff sold you a bike without a title - I like that, although I have little understanding of how the US system works!

We're not offended by that at all, as we have so very little understanding of how things work as well!

Sometimes it just depends on which line you queue up in at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Seriously.
