6v horns that don't sound like toys. was created by Yamahamadingdong

My new quest has brought me to horns. I've seen the 100-110dbish range 6v horns and the original 6v Nikko horns.

They aren't loud enough. My original one works fine, it's just not loud.

I had got this Screaming Banshee Mini and it fits right on a 75 Enduro, but it's 12v and that conversion didn't pan out, so it does not work.

A friend suggested installing a 6 to 12v power inverter. to feed the horn but I feel like that is not going to go like I'd want it to and something will die.

Are there secret 6v horns somewhere that are loud? I was looking forward to 126db blasts to alert people to stop trying to merge into me on the road but now all it does is make my tail light turn off and it goes "puh"

Might shove it in my station wagon if they wont let me return it since I soldered it on ... ! Unless someone here is interested in it!

I dug around online and didn't find anything good unfortunately.

When it comes to 6 volt horns, there is really not much of a choice other than Beep Beep Horns. there is Stator upgrades ranging from 12 volt lighting coils to a full kit to upgrade you to a full 12 volt D/C 160 to 180 watt power and modern CDI.

Power Dynamo makes a kit and I run one of these kits on a DT400B Hot rod project bike. it effortlessly runs a 60 watt 12 volt headlight with current to spare and it could likely handle any reasonable 12 volt horn without any trouble.

I think Rex's Speedshop out of the UK handles the upgraded 12 volt lighting coils and is cheaper than Power Dynamo.

I almost went down that route while going LED crazy before backpedaling and staying 6v, so I would rather not go that nuts just for a horn. If Corona wasn't messing with shipping, I could get a small 2A 6 to 12v converter and slap it on the front of the horn with epoxy and wire it in, but it wouldn't be here until July now.

the best I could find were the 110db ones, but I am not sure if they are any good. I could always order it and see I guess.

Have you tried tweeking the screw adjuster on the back?

Skip to 1:40 to see the screw I'm talking about.

Yeah, I did that. It's just not exactly loud in the first place, and people are kind of dumb. The stock horn is at the bottom threshold of being able to hear the horn over the bike, or people's music in their own cars.

I wanted something that is louder to avoid problems. I might have to suck it up and just use the 110db one.

The problem with 6V is current flow, it needs a lot of current to raise the same power level, twice that of a twelve volt system in fact.

Here's the age old thing with 6 volt systems, however there is a simple way to improve the horn:

Add a relay.

Use the stock wiring to power and control the relay and run power direct off the battery to supply the horn.

We use the same idea to improve the headlamp on bikes. We are aware that the wiring loom on some machines is extremely poor, causing headlamps to be very dim. We make a simple plug in mini relay unit powers the headlamp direct from the battery, using the stock switches. The improvement is startling. this is intended for specific 12V machines.

Yea gods....how much current will that swallow up!!!!!

Have they stopped teaching basic physics? You don't get power for nothing :cheer: :cheer:

I thought the horn ran off the battery. Maybe I'm mistaken.

Between me messing with the bike and me getting it in cold weather with a dead battery, I can't remember what it is supposed to do.

Some of the gauge lights work off the battery because they just illuminate with the key turned on. I thought the horn was like that too.

I'm not sure how to go about adding a relay or what one to use for a horn. I already attached the new horn thinking I was converting to 12v but backed it all out and the horn remains. I didn't swap it back yet.

It does.

Using a relay by-passes the low quality connection to ground given by the handle bar switch.

Its a really simple mod that will make the horn sound much louder.
