Electronic Issues was created by emangiar

Hello again! I am having some issues with my horn and blinkers. The horn on the bike works sporadically and the blinkers work but they are very dim. The blinkers do get brighter if I rev the engine. I imagine that is because the bike is producing more power. I have a 1974 DT125 and from what I understand the horn, blinkers and neutral light all run through the battery. I am not having any issues with the running or brake lights currently. Could this be a battery issue? I have had the battery since I bought the bike 2 years ago (and have no idea how long it was in there before I bought it) and have never charged it. I am pretty terrible with electrical stuff, so you may need to explain your theory to me as if I were a 6 year old kid, haha. Thank you for your help!

So... do you have a 12v DT125 with electric and kick start? (USA model)

Or a 6v model with kick start only?

Morning Em.

First thing on the horn, you may well find a small adjusting screw/bolt on it. Turn this either in or out and see if it makes any difference. If not, do a quick Search Forum for horn repair - it is possible to repair them. I'm no genius on electrics (or, in fact, anything!), but I've managed to repair two horns and posted here on how I did it. Let me know if you can't find the posts.

If the indicators work normally as you're riding along, then they're probably ok. If you can view the side of the flasher relay, Just make sure that the voltage and wattage of the bulbs shown there matches up with what is fitted in the indicators.

As MarkT said, post whether it's the electric start 12v model or not.

Good luck!

Mine is a 6v kick start only, and the blinkers are dull when I ride as well. They are not the original blinkers, the guy I bought the bike from did some mods to it, but they have always worked for me up until now.

OK. Check the voltage and wattage shown on the bulbs against what's shown on the flasher relay.

Some folks on here have posted that an awful lot of replacement blinkers came fitted with 12v bulbs. Now, if the previous owner didn't check and , if necessary, replace them..................!

I figured maybe some pics would help as well! Heres what I have for the horn (at least what I assume is the horn, again I am VERY bad at this stuff) and the relay for the blinkers (or what I assume is)

I also checked the battery level and it's about halfway in between the high mark and the low mark. It may need to be filled? I used some type of water to fill the battery on my old bike, but I'm not sure if I can do that now, or if I just need a new battery

First photo is the horn. If you view it from the other side can you see a little screw?

The bad news is that it looks like the type where it is constructed by one side being folded over the other. Replacements aren't expensive though, if the adjustment doesn't work.

If you can, remove the blinker lenses and read what voltage (v) and wattage (w) is printed on the bulbs - twist and turn to remove the bulbs (sorry!).

That's FANTASTIC life out of the battery! So on the turn signals being dim unless revved, I'd say the battery is the likely suspect... a bad connection (corroded) to the battery or ground could also be the problem.

Can you test the voltage of the battery at rest? You'll likely find it low.

On the horn, it could be related to the above... could also be some corrosion in the horn button or to one of the wires at the horn... or the horn itself might be going bad.

I do have a multi meter, but I'm not sure what setting to put it on. My hope is that it's just the battery and it can be a rather quick fix...
