Sticking clutch was created by jtb605a
Hi , hope everyone is doing well. Just wondering if anyone knows any tricks short of tearing it down. Just sticks after sitting a day or so if you put it in gear and ride it a minute then pull the clutch in and drag the brakes while hitting the throttle a couple times it will break free. Sometimes takes a couple of tries but then does great all day. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks

Pull the lever back to the 'bars and tie it in place with bale twine or such like until you need to ride it again.
Are you riding it regularly, doing many miles on it?

Tie them off like Al suggested. I have several bikes that do the same thing if they sit for a while. I have since cut strips of double sided Velcro and tie them all back when I am done riding. The strips are easily wrapped around a portion of the handle bars for storage during a ride, and they get rewrapped around the clutch lever until the next ride. Problem solved!

Don't ride much but it will usually stick overnight. I like your idea. Thanks

I put my bike in 2nd gear, pull in the clutch, then rock it back and forth until they break free. Mine also stick once it sits overnight.

I wonder what actually “sticks”…..
Is it due to grooves worn into the basket tabs?
Or is actually “stiction” between the plate faces?
Maybe adhesion is a better word. lol

That is what I am thinking, mine sat for decades, mixed up a gallon of fuel, pulled drain on carb and flushed it out then let it fill, started 1st kick, got up into 3rd, then downshifted and she stuck and about 20% grip to limp home.
I had came to see which 'basket' fit these bikes in case this one had been filed once before. Heard you can do it once then they are junk and most I see on eBay have ridges in them.
1978 IT250,
It took me this long to find all the things it was missing, had bike 20 years, still short 1 left number plate, likely in shop somewhere, and its plastics are junk.
New case as not stamped so not sure what to expect inside as a 12 year old had the bike, I thought a little too big for him,he said project he and his dad were working on and he wasn't going to ride until big enough and his dad passed, so I will one day finish this off and fix my clutch issue, like yours and the others who said theirs stuck, this is my next hurdle.
That first kick was impressive to me as well.. And then firing off whatever plugs were in head as I never swapped those.
Reed basket, boot, carb off 400, skid plate, brake lever linkage and hub for both front and rear, coil, then mice got into exhaust, so new tuner, KN air filter, controls.
20 years ago I stripped it, new swing arm bushings and painted frame.
Still short front axle bolt, have one 1" too long, might just thread it cut to length, and drill new key hole. And a YZ seat so a white cover needed as well.
Never heard of this need to keep handle pulled and so many with sticking clutches.
Maybe we can get a list of all the different years and models the baskets will work on our bike, if any billet aftermarket exist, or existed?
Without having assortment of them in my hands, a lot of bikes around that year in various bikes 250 on up appear to look the same, someone must know, searched for a while on internet, factually a few years, and never stumbled upon any 'cheat sheet' of parts interchange let alone clutch interchanges for our bikes. and we need one.

The right tools in the right hands can work wonders.

There used to be "spreadsheet" software that cross referenced a lot of the Yamaha parts. It's long gone as far as I know... this was like 15 years ago. Someone here probably has it or remembers it.
Yamaha "recycled" a lot of parts over many years and models. Often a site like Partzilla or CMSNL does as good a job as the old software did.
