Once i shake down my newly restored beast i want to go up Santiago Peak here in S. OC via dirt truck road that has an average 10% grade.

I am assuming that i will need most of the ~2 gals to get up, plus a small about to idle/coast down....but getting stuck is not an option so i need to determine whether i strap a gallon of extra gas on somehow.

Any experience appreciated,
thanks

Is that a significant change in altitude? If yes, a change of carb jet might be in order part way up - just don't ask me the details!

How many miles are you talking about? When I was a kid I made it up and back on the other side (Corona side) with my Dad on an LT2 and MG1T. I know they are smaller bikes. But MG1T only has about a gallon of gas. I think it was only a 15 mile ride or so to get up to the top? I'm not sure about the OC side distance.

hi -
thanks for inputs
its not an altitude concern, its an MPG thing!
from my house via road to where things really get interesting is about 10 miles. Then i hit the rocky road and its ~12 miles up to top with an average grade of 10%

22 miles one way?

DT360 owners can comment but I'd venture a guess that if you leave with a full tank you'll get there and back with a half tank left over if your bike is running reasonably correctly and in good condition.

They don't get good milage, I always carried an extra gallon on the rear rack when i did any distance over 100 miles
Do some pre-runs to determine your mileage before committing to any distance or just carry extra

This was 45 years ago, I ran a enduro race 75 miles and I missed my pit stop. I was on reserve but finished the race.

I would say, a lot further than if you were walking.. or if I was walking. Yah, good idea on the pre runs. A lot also depends on if your bike is tuned to perfection, pretty good, or ok. Your title is riddle like, but the thought is an interesting question! Good luck!

thanks all for the sage advise
the bike runs perfectly, i would venture to say fairly savagely once it gets past 5K rpm!

I would love to find a rack for the back that i could strap stuff (e.g. gal of gas) onto. Any inputs on one that fits or fits closely would be appreciated. Since the bike is 100% original i would love to find a yamaha one
