I don't understand the question.

If you meant shift forks, they slide about 1/4" each direction from centered.

If in gear, one fork will be moving to center disengaging those dogs, one fork will be moving off center to engage different dogs, and the third fork will remain centered.

Sorry, what I meant to say was the shift drum is going through all the gears how much does it rotate?1 circle or less? I think it’s jammed and the shift forks can’t move to one side or the other which might be causing the drum not to rotate ?
Thanks

looking at this pic i'd guess about 8/10 of a full turn without thinking too hard. The odd spot is neutral between first & second. You don't need to turn the rear wheel. Just move the mainshaft that's right in front of you to align the dogs. Only need to move the shaft a little bit either way for each set of dogs to find the slot then move on to the next year. when yo get to top gear or back to first gear it won't go any further. Just looking at the pic i found on the net--don't get confused by it as the pins i see & the washer bit are your end but the cam plate is out of sight the other end where the plunger & spring push into those hollows between the humps--Umm something like that.

Thanks that explains a lot. It also tells me something is not letting the shift drum to rotate even a 1/4 turn.
Very weird indeed.

Shift drum won't spin really easy. Has grooves which slide the shift forks side-to-side as the drum rotates.

Star wheel that RT325 pictured is to the left in the below picture which is what the shift detent plunger and spring contacts. The "low" spots are where the plunger holds the shift drum into gear. Neutral is the "half low" spot by the keyway in the star wheel.

I labeled the star wheel so you can see an example of where the plunger would be in each gear. You can't rotate the drum from 5 to 1 or 1 to 5 because the grooves in the shift drum end

(Note: I may have gone the wrong direction with the numbers. Don't use them to identify which direction the drum rotates. )

Do you guys think that maybe there’s a broken tooth floating around in there? That’s the only thing I can think of that made it work when I bought it and now it is stuck. The guy I bought it from was shocked when it worked at his house. He even mentioned to me that he had it laying on its side. Maybe laying it on it’s side had the foreign object move enough in there that it worked until it got wedged back again?
