MARKT
Hi I have never really been able to get the top dead technique, could do with some one showing me on my bike
I assume TD is when the kick lever starts to stiffen up on compression then kick it through?
I am unable to kick it hard and fast as I weigh 73 Kgs and im knackered after 4 kicks, so each kick I stand on the left hand peg then put my whole body weight on the kick starter

Okay, yes, that's bad. Should not rub there. Look at pictures of other bikes, I think your lever is wrong. Here's a link to one of several magazine articles in the Tech Library from when your bike was new. yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/articles1/5...le-magazine/download
Yes, you'll feel the resistance as it starts on compression stroke. It takes a little practice but not hard. . I'm sure one of the very experienced UK members would be happy to help out if you live near anyone.
Careful on the peg standing.... keep an eye on sidestand bracket. The method of standing on peg to start you need to use is known to cause bending/breakage of the bracket. Might be a good idea to get a short step stool or build a crate or something to stand on when starting at home?

"Your starter lever bend doesn't look right to me... "
I agree with MarkT that the bend looks odd compared to what I have on my same bike. I question if yours might be bent a little further than it should in the area I circled in red. The other photo is my lever for comparison.

your lever looks more boxey than mine, if you take a pic from the rear with the kick start folded out ward can get a better comparison of bend

MARKT
I sorted the movement on the boss today, I took the bolt out and found the threads in the middle of the bolt were chewed up and the bolt was bent!! I replaced the bolt and now no movement and a tighter clamp force on the splined shaft

So are you all set now that you replaced the damaged clamp bolt?
Or do you still need another comparison photo with my lever folded outward?
Your bolt may have been damaged by someone trying to remove the kickstart lever without completely removing the clamp bolt. As you probably know, the bolt aligns with a groove in the splined shaft which prevents the kick start lever from coming off if the bolt is not completely removed.

My guess on the bolt is the lever hitting the frame which is basically trying to pull boss off the splines and is probably what damaged the bolt. Same thing as Schu says except the rubbing is trying to pull the boss off the splines every time you kick it over.
In my opinion, the lever hitting the frame peg mount needs to be addressed before some damage is done. Fixing the bolt and getting it good and tight on the splines might lead to the bolt being damaged again or something else might give way... hopefully not the magnesium side cover.
