78 DT175 Dies was created by gwindsor
Hello All,I've had my 78' DT175 for about a year and have been riding it with no issues til yesterday. After riding for 30 minutes or so, it dies. I pull the clutch and coast to a stop. Won't kick start till I let it sit for a minute or 3. Then usually restarts and runs for 5-10 and dies again. Checked fuel filter. looked good, but removed it anyway. Checked tank breather tube no issues. Pulled plug and gave it a kick.start and no fluid came out. Now today after 30 minutes or so it dies and now the kick start won't budge. Let it sit (cool) for 10 minutes or so and again starts right up and I get home. Looked up the previous post - "1978 dt175 dies after riding for a while" should I also be looking at the coil.Thank you

It's your gas cap. Take an air hose to it, top side first then the bottom side. Blow it good.
Had the same problem on the Greenie thread couple years back.

Like Rick C says. As I was reading your post, I was immediately thinking that the tank breather was restricted.
If you are not getting enough fuel, this could cause it to run weak, overheat and partially seize, hence kick start not budging until it cooled down.
Just loosen it off on the threads so that it does not sit on the seal and see if there is an improvement.
Note. Not wise to do this on a full tank. You may find your "accoutriments" getting hot or tingling.

Thanks for the idea . Blew out the cap and hose, didn’t seem plugged. Rode for 20 and died. Cooled for a couple of minutes started up and died in just 2-3 minutes. Took the tube off the cap and again ran 2-3 minutes and died. Time for a new cap? Going to try with no hose and cap slightly loosened. Thanks again.

Sounds like a typical source coil on the way out. But kickstart not budging sounds like its seizing up lightly the freeing when cooled a bit. But I dunno, maybe not that.

It's seizing up. Either lean on fuel or lean on oil.
It may be past the point of no return and a rebuild needed
But you need to find out what happened
You said you pulled the plug. How did it look?
I've had a piece of metal partially block the oil port

Thank you for all the suggestions. Here is the SP. Oil levels look good.

Looks good fuel wise but maybe a little oil dry
I just pulled my plug. You can see it's a little oily
I would pull the oil line at the carb and kick it over a few times at WOT and see if oil comes out
