1972 Yamaha CT2 175 rebuild update - Battery drain was created by 78dave
First thanks to all for your input. I have the bike up and running after a complete rebuild and it sounds really good so that is a positive. I noticed back a while that my battery (yes I know I don't need it) would not be at 6V after being in the bike. I have been chasing the neutral light that does not work. New bulb and it lights, but not getting power up front through the brown wire. The light blue wire from the switch is indeed grounding out in neutral, but no light on tach. I would assume I need a battery to get that light to lite. Thought on lost power up front and battery drain. All lights are removed and are brand new as they were removed back in the 70's and stored - will likely be selling that set off soon. I appreciate the help

Are the other items (assuming that they're fitted!) that take power from the battery working ok? We're talking horn, indicators and rear light here. If they aren't, it could be the main switch, or maybe even the fuse.
Dodgy charging coil or rectifier could be the cause of the battery not charging when engine running.

So nothing on the bike now - no horn, switch, tail or side lights. Wiring is still intact. I will check to see if I am charging today. Battery was low last night which caught my attention. Might do an amp test to see if it is leaking. I cleaned the main switch and it looked pretty good. My mind is always drawn to red + and Black - but it is the brown wire carrying power up front.

Ok I tested the resistance across all the contacts coming from the switch using the switch diagram in the service manual. I do not have continuity across the red and brown wire and that would tell me why no power is going to the front of the bike where I need the brown wire for power. Thoughts?

Did you mean continuity as opposed to resistance?

78dave, I dont know if this will help you, but this is what worked for me. I attach the battery charger to the battery and then I'm getting a good 13-14v in the system without having to run the bike. This way I could test all my grounds and positives and I found 2 blown bulbs in my speedo cluster and one dodgy indicator connection / bulb (still not fixed)
the other thing that helped alot was having a hot cup of tea, seemed to clear away a bunch of electrical issues, funny thing tea

Regardless of which there is no way my switch (original) can make contact between the red and brown wires. Still not sure how power gets to the front bucket. I have probed and tested power and with the switch in off position I have contact between Black/white and black in P1 I have contact between green and white but not red and brown. I took the switch apart (simple) and there is no way red and brown can make contact in P1. I have brown, bark brown, blue, light blue, pink, and black but none have power. To light any lights I need power.

OK.
Here are a couple of links:-
This is a diagram of where the wires are soldered on the underside of the switch:-

Man the picture is spot on and I might have something here because of your diagram. When I started first gettingthis bike started before the rebuild I noticed the red wire was broken off. I soldered it back on but perhaps into the wrong place. I see in the diagram there is one open tab and that is where I soldered it. Red actually belongs on the double tab that is soldered together. More after IO try this - THANK YOU

Yes that was it!!! I now have a neutral light and I think that may have been my battery drain. Gr8uncleal you are a prince of a fellow - cannot thank you enough - bike is all buttoned back up
