Stator issues was created by tsmitty1958

Hi all,

Happy New Year!
73 CT3 I bought it in June. Someone had converted it to CDI and used it as a dirt bike. Has 2 wiring harnesses and it was a mess. I removed the CDI wiring, bough a used stator and flywheel. Got spark and it ran pretty well. I wanted to then restore it to original. Tore the engine apart, replaced all the bearings and seals. Repainted everything put it all back together. NO SPARK. New points and condenser. I think I have a bad coil on the stator but can't figure it out.

After many hours of reasearch and testing, I put a stator from a 73 CT3 that runs on it and got great spark. Bought another used stator, installed it, great spark.

Now all back together and will attempt to start it soon.

My question is...... is a stator worth trying to fix, or am I just wasting time? I'd love to fix it and have a spare as I have 3 CT3's and plan on restoring more in the future.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

If I understand the situation, your CT3 had a 'conversion' to a CDI system, which had/developed 'issues' so it was in turn replaced with a different flywheel magneto from something else.

From memory, the CT series have a mechanical advance unit attached to the flywheel that can be seen through the access holes of the flywheel. When timing those up, we would fashion (out of welding rod or coat hanger) a "V" shaped clip to insert into the holes on the advance unit flyweights in order to put it at full advance, and then proceed to set the timing (dial indicator, points checker, etc.) at the book spec (don't recall right now- look it up please). After installation of new points/condenser we have no spark.

Now you have another new-to-you stator assembly that is now functional.

My thoughts: First, in answer to your question, yes, that stator can be rebuilt, provided you can find the proper and correct coils (see a parts book. Partzilla has them online).
Second: provided you can afford his services, contact DEET as he does a n absolutely terrific job refurbishing those flywheel magneto systems. I believe he bench tests each one before shipping yours back to you so he and you know it will work.
Third: Is it possible that when the points were replaced on the initial pass on the first stator, that the points wire was installed on the wrong side of the post, thus grounding the points? It has been done before (ask me how I know

As for checking resistance/impedance of the individual coils I'll point you to a manual, or perhaps someone with better knowledge and memory than myself can assist there.

And by the time you get 3 CT3's rebuilt and restored, we'll be coming to you for information and advice!!!

Thanks for the response. Tried three sets of points and 2 condensers. Bought an ohm meter, continuity tester and a capacitance tester. All wires have continuity. One of the coils has a mark on it like something rubbed it and the protective covering is missing but the wires look to be intact. The condensers check out.

I'm just frustrated that it had spark!
