DT3 - Does anything sit behind the blanking plug?

Having more or less finished my RD125, RD200, RD400, CT1 (well, sort of!) and R5 restos, I thought that I'd resume work on the DT3.

Whilst removing the gearbox sprocket, I noticed that the blanking plug just below it was protruding. It wouldn't re-seat with a gentle tap, so I removed it - and lots of emulsified transmission oil escaped to freedom! Is there really nothing sitting behind this plug, other than about 2-3 inches of void, or am I missing a part?

There are usually 2 rubber coated blanking plugs. When the cases were made, its easier to bore right through, when machining the registers which shift drum, and selector forks fit into. The plugs blank the end of these.

Thanks very much.

I know that the transmission oil isn't under pressure, but I was a little surprised when it came out and that the blanking plug might be the only thing retaining it.

The plugs usually only cause problems, after the chain comes off, and damages the part of the case they fit into.

I'm surprised you have a void of 2 to 3 inches under the plug... sounds like way too much.

Shift fork shafts (small plug) and shift drum (large plug) should be very near the plug if I remember correctly?

Only one bung in DT3? which sits in the case at the selector drum.
Ok just looked & of course the selector shafts have them too.
If you're looking at a 'void' then you're looking up the hollow inside of the drum--so no problem there. If you look closer you'll see the drum outer edge sitting close to the end of the hole but slightly further in than where the bung sits when its in flush.
Not good if it's a less than tight fit though.
Emulsified oil is just how it looks if you've had it running just prior to pulling the bung out.
Now i'd better go look at my parts cases to see if i'm taking BS haha.

Screwdriver did seem to go in a fair way, mind.

Anyway, the plug fitted back in nice and tight, so we'll see what happens as and when/if I get the old girl fired up and on the move.

Just edited #6 of course the selector shaft have small bungs--which i didn't think they did.
Anyway--be good to see a pic of yours with drum bung out. Never mind it's back in now.
Must be ok & as it should be as can't go anywhere the other end.
