Gear cam stopper was created by MEAW

I have just found an oil leak around the base of the screw of the gear cam stopper under the engine of my SC500. A new gasket around the base should fix it. When I undo the screw the spring and stopper should fall out. After replacing the gasket and returning the spring and stopper back in does the engine have to be in neutral or a gear for it to go back in correctly?

Don't worry about it.  Unless you mix up the order of the parts or something, there is no "trick" to removing and replacing the detent plunger and spring.
