Sad DT3 was created by apex

This sad looking DT3 came with the '71 DT1 I got last year. It's been sitting on the side of the house, looking, well, sad. Missing some key expensive parts, engine stuck, stator & flywheel vanishing into white powder.

Some positives though, like the oil pump looks OK and turns, the toolbox is there (empty), rectifier & horn are there. Shifter's not bent. Pipe is there and straight, but no baffles.

Nothing to lose, so, why not see how bad the engine is stuck. Is it rings to cylinder, or crankshaft? The spark plug is missing, but the reed set is still there and the pipe. Maybe if the engine is not stuck bad it could run?

Here's the sad machine. Fender damage looks intentional, too bad.

With the head off. Doesn't look too bad in there after all, but still could be rings or a rusted crank.

Popped the cylinder free and there's a good sign, the crank rotated! Could just be a soft ring seize to the cylinder!

And...it was! Used some persuasion to free the piston (nothing to lose!). The cylinder had corroded to one of the mounting studs and was a bear to work off, but it finally released. The top ring (keystone) was not stuck in the piston, but the bottom one was anout 3/4 the way around, and based on the piston condition, scoring & metal transfer, looks like it was parked due to a seizure. Baked the piston in the BBQ for about 20 mintes, and voila!! Bottom ring came out!

Rod and crank look great, no discoloration of the rod, and a nice sheen of injector oil on the crank weights.

Clean your points everyone, clean your points!

The stator is a mess, and the flywheel looks similar. That junk could probably be cleaned up for use, but, I have a whole spare setup that will go on for the kick start that's in good working order.

For the "will it start" process, I'm re-using the top end. There are some serious gouges in this cylinder, but the rings are already mated to their respective grooves so for this will it start I'm sure everything will be OK. Or not? We'll see. Another bright spot- It's Standard Bore!

I've decided to pull oil pumps off of engines when they're going to be woken up again, based on the stripped oil pump driven gear found in my '71 DT1 (that's in another thread). And here we may have found the seizure culprit. That output hose is folded in half! More to come, need to make a base gasket, find my tester stator/flywheel, find my tester ignition coil.

Gosh you've got a bit of a job there but bet you'll have it running before long. Another one saved.

I forgot my tester stator, had to use the wiring loom from it for a different bike (darn memory). Decided to soda blast the stator of this bike, to see how it looks cleaned up.

After. Last pic, just look how little of the points spring is left! WOW!!

The coil consists of a long copper wire with insulation on around it...clear insulation in these coils.  If the insulation gets compromised and the wire gets a bare spot and touches another wrap or anything else then it is no longer a "coil" and no worky.

Hey Evan, I probably have a stator/mag set up if you need it.

Thanks Rick!
I had a new set of points on hand, so mounted them up to the stator. Soda blasted the mounting points on the engine case, and bolted it all back up. Didn't try to clean up the flywheel from the bike yet, so for these purposes I'm running a spare.

Made a base gasket, cleaned everything up and got the piston on.

Piston on, cylinder next.

Found an ignition coil in my spare parts bin, mounted it up and ran a wire (OK it's a fuse holder) for testing purposes.

And, wouldn;t you know it...we have spark! Next will be swapping the carb & throttle from my '71 onto the reed block, and run some fuel to it.

Just in case you aren't aware , your DT1 carb will be jetted significantly
differently to your DT3 carb .
