Reusing CT-1 case gasket? Dry, or grease? was created by Tom P
I'm replacing my CT-1 clutch friction plates after 2+ years (and almost 3K miles). Last ones were aftermarket 5 for $14, this time I have OEM, for 5 for $60. Already have the old ones out, scuffed the steels, and the new ones are soaking in oil for wet clutches. Last time I put a new gasket on and lightly greased each side. The gasket still looks good, and came off easily. I have a new one, but was thinking of reusing the old one anyway, and wondered how many here do that, and if you install them wet, dry, with grease, or with sealant? BTW it wasn't really leaking that I could tell, and the mating surfaces are still very clean (I cleaned them well after getting the original gasket off 3 years ago).

I have reused case gaskets, that were in good condition, many times without any problems. I would make sure that both sides of the gasket were wet with oil before installing.

Yes, I grease gaskets and re-use them if in good shape too... it's an old trick I learned from a Swedish Factory Husqvarna mechanic at the track back in the 1970's.

HOLY COW! What a difference OEM friction plates make! I should have done this a couple years ago. They do not slip at all, and it engages so firmly I can't believe it! Now I can't be sloppy when taking off in first gear, or I might stall it. Before I didn't even have to think about it.
I appreciate the responses, but in the end I decided to go ahead and put the new gasket on, and dry this time. Seems to be sealing so far, and I have fresh oil in the gearbox as well. But for anyone that reads this in the future, if you're thinking of getting those cheap aftermarket clutch plates on eBay, don't do it! In fact when I compare them now to the OEM, there's a bit more surface area on the OEM, as well as looking like a different kind of material. Of course it could be that I just got a bad brand, but I'm going to stick to OEM from now on

Did another long ride today. Even top speed is increased! I can hit 65 on the speedo (which is really closer to 62) but couldn't do that before. I think it was continually slipping, especially into a head winds.
I got lucky too... the plates were on sale for around $11 each, with a free shipping promotion. Now they're listed at $24 each!

You did good on that price. I recently paid in the higher price range for my Yamaha frictions.

Yeah I can't believe the price I got. The funny thing is, I had those in my cart on Partzilla from about 6 months ago. I don't remember now if they were on sale when I put them in the cart, or if the price dropped since. When I opened up the cart and saw them for around $11 bucks each, I thought what the heck, that's not bad! Then I click on the link today and they're $24 again. That's why I didn't order OEM plates back when I first started working on this CT-1. I was having to do so much to it I was penny pinching, not being sure if I would even get it running.

Just an FYI regarding Partzilla. My experience has been if you can buy it on Partzilla your local Yamaha dealer can get the parts as well w/o shipping costs.

Copper spray a gasket.
2 coats and let it dry, then assemble.
