Hey gang, I need some help here please. The neighbor, young man, bought a 1971 CT1 175 a few weeks ago and I've been helping with a few things to get it road ready. The guy he bought it from put a new clutch in it and I can't get it adjusted according to the instructions in the Service Manual that came along with the bike.
Adjusted as instructed the clutch isn't releasing the whole way; makes it tough to shift through the gears, can't find neutral while the engine's running and it wants to move with the lever pulled in, in gear when revved or stalls. When adjusted further by turning the adjusting rod in (clockwise) and setting the lever pull correctly the clutch will slip when accelerating..

Any advice/help?

I'd pull the ignition side cover and make sure the worm gear actuator is clocked correctly.

If you've adjusted it as per the manual and the clutch cable and helical clutch screw are moving freely I think you might need to have the clutch cover off and have a look at the clutch assembly.
One possibility is the clutch basket has grooves on the fingers caused by the tabs on the friction discs.
Also check the friction and steel plates are in the right order and that the steel plates are flat.
If that is the case you can file down the ridges and should be good to go.
While you have the clutch cover off check the shift shaft adjustment as that can obviously affect gear change.
Could also remove the neutral bolt and check the spring and ball are present.
Should have said check the push rod isn't bent and that the ball bearing is fitted.
Best of luck.

Mark, Sorry, wife and I were on vacation when I wrote this post and just really getting back to it. We plan on working on the bike this afternoon. What do you mean by the worm gear actuator being clocked correctly? The adjusting screw is threaded on both ends and would only go in one way to mate with the push rod and the lock down nut also threads onto the adjusting screw to secure it. Sorry, but I don't understand what needs clocked. This is different from my DT2 where the worm gear actuator is right by where the clutch cable connects at the engine.

Never mind. I looked over the parts diagram and see where the worm gear actuator's located.

I have a 1971 CT1, and just replaced my clutch and clutch cable. If I were you I would loosen the clutch cable adjustment on the perch completely, then open up the ignition cover, as shown in the picture you posted. Loosen the 10 mm lock nut on the actuator, then back out the flathead screw enough that it is not touching the push rod. Then *lightly* turn it clockwise until it just touches the push rod. After it touches the push rod lightly, back it out a quarter turn, and hold that screw with the screwdriver as you tighten the 10 mm lock nut. Then go up to your clutch perch and adjust the cable until you only have 1/8" to 3/16" or so of play in the lever until it starts engaging. If that doesn't solve it, let us know.

By the way, when sitting at a stop neutral is hard to hit unless you slightly move the bike forward as you're trying to engage it. I usually hit neutral as I'm rolling to a stop.
