Tank id question! was created by Gr8uncleal

During the travails of getting a correct tank for my CT1C, I accumulated what I thought were two CT1B tanks. However, despite being the correct colour and looking like original paint, they are different.

Images are attached, and my current thought is that the one on the right, as you look at the photos, is for a DT/RT1. Confirmation, or otherwise, would be much appreciated. And, before anyone suggests it, the CS3 has a different petrol tap mount.

Many thanks.

Good point RT325... tank on right could be CT1 and tank on left could be HT1?

Sure doesn't look like tank on right is about 3/4 of a gallon bigger...  which it would have to be if one on right is a DT1 next to CT1 on left.  In my mind at least, DT tanks are visually quite a bit bigger than CT.

BUT, if one on right is CT and one on left is HT, the difference is like 0.2 gallon which looks plausible.

Or maybe not, parts diagram shows HT1 has a threaded petcock.

Right, I've done some measurements.

The one on the right is slightly larger in all dimensions, between 0.5 and 1cm, depending on where I measured.

Re the HT1 aspect, when I first got the bike it was fitted with a HT1 tank - it was Peter that pointed this out to me. Of course, being an arse, I decided that I had to have the correct tank, so sold the HT1 one before finding a CT replacement!

Returning to CT vs DT, I had CT1B tinware fitted for a while, whilst a mate repaired a "CT1C" tank that I purchased. The CT1B tank that I used (must have been the one on the left of the photos) fitted on the frame fine. When I came to fit the "CT1C" tank, it was really hard to fit, to the extent that I had to reduce the width of the rubber mounts and, even now, I can't use the seat lock. I initially put this down to a poorly fitted replacement seat cover, but now.............?!

When Pete and Bernard stopped by on their TET run, I mentioned my tank fitment struggle to Pete, and that I thought the B and C tanks might be different dimensions, but he assured me that they weren't.

I had a look at the "CT1C" tank on the bike this morning, and it looks like the one on the right of my photos, so maybe even my "correct" tank is actually another DT1 tank?!

I also had a look at CT1 and DT1 tanks on fleabay, and I'm pretty sure that some of those are mis-labelled. It's a chuffing nightmare!

Another photo.

Not sure how well the photo shows it, but the neck of the one on the right is undoubtedly wider.

I'm also wondering if there was a "market variant"?  Say the non-usa models with the full double seat had a different tank than the US models with the smaller seat?

Another example is the "AG" models had a much larger tank on basically the same bike.

I don't know how much trouble it would be to test the capacity...  if the larger tank holds 2.5 gallons then it's likely a DT/RT tank.

Thanks Mark.

That would be US gallons, as opposed to Imperial?
