If you really want to be "correct" concerning the oil filter on the Mustang, it should be painted black to match the block. Filters were painted in place along with the motor. The original shape of the filter with its knurling on the bottom is hard to find.

Mark350, good catch!  Not many people know that about when the filter was installed and color.  Yes the original knurl is hard to find. They were reproduced and available up to a couple of years ago for a fairly reasonable price.  I’m sure someone is scalping them.  This will do for me.

They still repro the rotunda filter with the step down in red or gold when it left the factory they are block color usually with a OK stamp on a Dearborn car

Semo mustang sells them I’m pretty sure 
 edit they are out of stock. Scott Drake did the repros

Phil you can buy the Autolite with the star and step down is the service part the dealer sold or you could paint it block color and still have the correct step down
