Skydancer,
I use Yamatopdog foam with Ryder seat cover with great results. My biggest challenge has been a seat edging that stays put while stretching seat cover - finally cracked that nut so the 68 DT1 seat I built last year was a breeze.
Just my 2 cents.
Good luck!!

SWM,
Yes i agree. That is the best combination for seats. I may have to order a Ryder seat cover after all if i don't get this one to fit right the 4th and last time!
thanks for the input.

If I'm not mistaken I've used the Ryder cover before but not sure it has the same grain pattern as original. That could have been on my 76 too. Just be sure it has the correct number of ribs and grain pattern.

Pretty much a finished bike. Still have to start the engine and check all the vitals out. Hope she runs goods and everything works as it should. Don't know because i could not run this bike long before the build. Tim Rains did a beautiful paint job on the gas tank and headlight shell. Very happy with his work.
Bike came out nice and wears some patina. Tried hard to build it with the stock look in mind. I ended up with a yamatopdog seat foam and was able to custom fit the KDI seat cover to work. The seat base is original and still wears the original paint. Some of the frame is still original paint as well. Oil tank is the original paint and graphics. I did install the NOS tank emblems on the bike.
Here are some pics.

Outstanding! I would offer you what you have in it but I
haven't won the lottery yet! I know what it take to build
one.

Finished up the last 3 things i wanted to do on the bike.
1st was to get the original horn working and back on the bike. I was using a horn off i think a 71 DT for the time being. After fighting with it for 2 straight weeks taking it apart and then back together again a million times i got it to work and boy does it work good. I sure learned alot about horns in the process but in the end I'm pretty sure it was pure luck i got it to blast away!
2nd thing was installing a nice original period correct gas cap. I had the newer Yamaha replacement on it.
3rd was locating and buying the NOS pre formed Yamaha gas line. found one on e-bay. I won't install it while riding the bike as i have a 90 degree fuel filter with straight line on it now in case of any settlement in gas tank for the next month or so.
Here is a video of her running in case anyone wants to check it out. Had to do it in the garage as the weather turned bad fast. We had mid 80's all week and today we have snow showers and 37degrees! Good ole Michigan.
You can hear the original horn how loud it is and check out the cool looking blue high beam light on these 68's when i turn the high beam on. The idle is about 200 rpm high in the video. I will be setting it to about 1300-1400 after putting some more mileage on it. Have almost 6 miles on it so far.
You can click on the setting in the video and make it HD if it's not already. I recorded it in 4k on my phone.

Very nice! The taillight seemed very bright. But then I can only compare to my dingy RT2…
We just 6” of snow 40 miles south of the tip of Lake Superior…
