New to me HT1 Hard starting issues was created by Abomb

My new to me 1971 HT1...found it at a garage sale...

It has 371 original miles on it, and I have cleaned the tank, cleaned the carb, cleaned the petcock, and cleaned the plug...it is still extremely difficult to get started. I will start with a new plug....I know the battery is bad, but when it does start, it runs very well, from idle, all the way through the gears...any suggestions on getting this thing to start easier?

If good compression and passes crankcase pressure test timing may be off , but more likely choke not working properly. A quick test is to have it warmed up and idleing then turn the choke on, motor should slow down and load up with fuel

Chances are the pilot jet is the initial hard start problem. They call it a starter jet. I use bread twist tabs on small pilot jets. Even when a bike is run dry from off position petcock it should start 3rd. kick choke on..

Starter jet is in well in bottom of float bowl. Often overlooked and will cause hard starting. Not removable like pilot jet is. While you have carb off, clean it again. :)

I thought I cleaned everything at least twice, but I very well may have missed this one...plus, tank was so bad, I put an inline fuel filter on it, but took it off, thinking it could have been part of the problem, so I need to clean the carb again anyway....like I said, when it starts, it runs great, so I don’t think it’s the pilot jet...which I cleaned thoroughly, as those seem to be 90% of all small bike issues for me, but the starter jet sure sounds like the issue...thank you

Forgot to mention... DO NOT turn the lights on with a bad battery. You will very likely destroy the headlight.

Also, I was assuming you were talking cold start... if carb clean still doesn't help and/or it's hard to start all the time, then next likely culprit is ignition side crank seal.

Thank you, it was the starting jet, or actually the enrichener tube above that jet...I sprayed it all down, ran a wire through the brass tube, put it together, and just as advertised, it started on the third kick....first kick every time when recently ridden...

Thanks again...

Good idea to poke something through the jet as well as the tube. Jet is where it starts from. Interesting the tube was blocked or restricted. I don't think i've ever had that but i'll pay closer attention to the tube next time.

Hello Abomb.
Now do your self a favour. The little o ring at the bottom of the needle jet assembly that you see when you remove the float bowl, go and get a new genuine one and replace your old one.
Mine disintegrated and is a well documented problem that's easy to fix on these wee beasties.
Also get some Lucas ethanol stabilizer to mix with your fuel.
It's only cheap and lasts for ages .
Ace bike ,i love mine.
Regards Shyted
