No dipstick just a plug! was created by principal282

Been a bit of oil under my little red 74 gt80.  Today I replaced the oil line , and seems a lot less.  But there has been trans oil too when warm and I pull in.  I go to check and there is no dipstick!!  Just a plug?  Am I missing something?

The 80's had a separate dipstick in the tool kit.

Was that an attempt to overcome the "Should the plug be screwed in or out to dip" confusion?

Thanks, Mark! As always, you knew!!  ordered!
my goal is no more oil dribbles on garage floor.
I had a brittle oil line dribbling a bit, but I also wonder if I might have a bit of trans oil leaking somewhere too.
seemed down a bit so I want to keep a close eye on it.

good luck with the inventory reduction.  Hope you can still enjoy some of your road worthy collection.

Once you receive your dipstick, would you be so kind as to share the measurement on the actual length of the dipstick from end to first bend of the handle?

I ended up making my own based on filling it up with the proper amount of oil and then trimming a coat hanger wire down as needed and bending the handle. But I would like to know how my homemade dipstick matches up to a Yamaha dipstick.

I don't think so...  many of the smaller engines had this "feature"...  The early YG1 (80) and the 1988-90 DT50 (17W series we got in the USA) did as well.  It looks to me like the problem is the clutch or a gear gets in the way of having a dipstick in the center of the fill plug.

Did you receive your dip stick?
I'm anxious to confirm the proper length on my homemade version.
