While going over engine was looking for a reason for a significant loss of top end power. Finally found one!  EXHAUST.      

The exhaust had 2 brackets lodged one on top of one another towards the center of the pipe.  It at least appears the silencer was originally routed through these
and maybe they were welded perpendicular to airflow further down the pipe?  The brackets were blocking airflow and reduced power significantly.
As a result, it was quiet too, which was ok. 
 
Can someone describe the way/where the two brackets should fit?   Was there originally sound deadening material?  I need to look over the weld marks a bit closer for location evidence.     

Ideas?

You can see the spot welds for both baffle plates , on the back of the section you've removed .
 

Show some pictures of the baffle / silencer insert . It looks like the insert is for a 125 / 175 rather than a 250 .
They are different .

Is there a spark arrestor deep in the end, they block up. The perforated steel you uncovered there would originaly had noise deadening material between it & the walls. Be similar further toward too. Be good if they could be unzipped around the weld all the way to open out & study the layout inside.

The silencer (which looks like a CT1) was difficult to get out. I suspect someone must have tapped it in and broke the baffles loose. The parts list and my exhaust do look alike. Of course the silencer, does not.  


I am going to weld the trap door back on, then cut a slit on both sides thin enough for about a 1/16" rectangle of metal to fit with a donut hole large enough to fit the silencer and support it. If I don't butcher this, I might add a 2nd one.

is this the correct silencer? one I saw in parts list was "bent" a little at end.  weren't there 2 types? ad says the number is correct. haha price says it is wrong.

Part way through DT1B production at approx # 22,000 , the exhaust pipe and baffle changed . You wont see it in any parts book or Fiche . The baffle you have is correct for your bike , but is all twisted at the end .
The AT1 and CT1 use the same baffle but use a different insert inside the baffle .
You need a fresh baffle p/n 214-14753-00 and silencer outlet ( insert ) 214-14752-00 .
I have seen a NOS baffle on Ebay recently , but you could probably find a used one from an AT or CT fairly easily .
The outlet might be a bit more difficult to locate .
If you could straighten your existing silencer , that would work , but I'm not optimistic about that one .

exhaust back on. With the original 2 plates gone, it runs and sounds like it has an aftermarket expansion chamber.  surprised there was really no power gain, at least not as much as I expected. 

More to come...tuning, silencer mods of current and a correct one on way.  looks like I'm drilling down on problem and its probably the silencer.
