Lots of good info here. One thing I'm not seeing is how to get them apart with out damaging them. I've made up a nice tool to un screw the cap and that worked nicely. so now how does the rod come out ? is there a clip or something holding it in or do I just need to pull harder ?

They just pull out. You just work them up and down until it releases. I am in the middle of rebuilding two sets. One set came right out while the other made be question like you if there was something holding it from releasing.

Something else that may be of interest to the group. As I was restoring my DT250 shocks, I inquired if anyone had better shape adjusting nuts as mine were pretty bad. A member replied with a set from a DT175 which I purchased.

I heard later that the 175 and 250 are different in size, so I was interested to see what varied. I see from old write ups on shock parts that the two shocks had different part numbers.

When I got the DT175 pulled apart I was surprised to see everything looked and measured identical. The person I bought them from at least was told they cane off a DT175.

Fast forward - while cleaning, I notice a big difference between the 175 and 250 version. The 175 has a small hole in the center of the cylinder. Did not measure but it looks like 1/32”. I rechecked the 250 to make sure I did not miss them or they were clogged. No hole on my 250

So either this is the only difference between the DT175 and DT250 or I have a later version DT250 with a design change with the hole in the cylinder.

I will reassemble both sets and see if the damping is different between the two. I will post some pictures.

The shocks I’m doing are from a 1974 YZ125A they also have a hole drilled in the rod. I managed to get them all apart no troubles. Now the parts are in my ultrasonic getting cleaned up.

How about these little piston ring like things ? What’s the chances of finding some new ones of those ? Or should I just lathe some up out of delrin or nylatron ?
