75 or 76 DT250 was created by Markb61

Although I thought I had bought a 1975 DT250B ,after checking vin it seems to be a 1976 DT250C am I right in thinking the only difference between years is the new Portuguese orange paint?

Decals on tanks and pipe heat shield are slightly different too... I think most of the differences are cosmetic?

Some of the experts on that model will hopefully be along to comment.

The 76 model came with a voltage regulator stock .
That limits the voltage on the headlight , and possibly some others .
Blown headlamps are a frequently recurring issue here on posts .
Hopefully , not a problem you'll encounter .

Another tell tale sign is the 1976 model came factory with a voltage regulator bolted on the air cleaner housing, it is a little metal box with a single yellow wire coming from it, not a fool proof identifier as many upgraded the 1975 models with a 1976 air box and voltage regulator. And as MarkT mentioned the 1976 fonts are different. Some of the differences are the “250” on the fuel tank is “squarish” font while the other 1975 is “roundish”, the 1976 oil tank just says “enduro” the 1975 say “enduro 250” again best bet to identify is serial number sequence as all the things I mentioned are easily changed.

Welcome! from Salisbury, UK Garry. Can you believe that three mates from the small village where I grew up all moved, independently, to Oz? One of them even had a DT125!

Anyway, 575 is the model code for the 1976 DT250C that Yamaha marked the market for as "Others". Looking at the Yamaha model guide, my guess is that Oz and Kiwi bikes were moved by Yamaha from the "Oceania" market into "Others". If you can find a Yamaha service manual for your part of the world, then this may give more detailed info.

Hope that this helps.

Thanks so much Cobber. Here in Oz in terms of Vintage MX racing we have pre 75 and pre 78. This thing flies! I might even win against the MX's
and YZ's. I also have 465H and 490k and DT250A.

Which yellow wire and which year DT250?

There is a yellow (sometimes yellow/white) out of the stator to power the headlight switch...  and a yellow out of the dimmer part of the headlight switch that powers high beam.
