If the return spring was crossed, [not pulled apart parallel as it should be [to sit correct across the eccentric screw & the piece of the change arm], then you'll have about 1/3 of the movement [guessing] of un-sprung lever travel.
That 'might' cause an issue for hooking over the next pin unless you lift the lever a little to hook over it to change the next gear.

Be "careful" that the spring doesn't bite you as they take no prisoners holding them straight & against their will.

Some reason the end of your crank and gear nut all chewed up? Looks like the clutch assy. may not have been seated properly?

Good spotting ALNARV. I can't imagine what could whiz around there to cause that. Does the alloy basket overlap there if the nut came loose Be interesting if motors could talk.

should have changed the nut out while i had it apart
next time..
all gears changing smooth now
glad i didnt have to split the cases
thinking a yearly winter strip down might be on the cards, casing polish new clutch next time, beaings and seals again
feel like, with everyone help here, have gained some understanding of the bike so thanks all
still getting somewhite smoke on start up, hesitation and a missfire but will keep at it am getting close now
