1972 DT2 250 hole in the piston update was created by wbrewstersr@gmail.com
Hi everyone
finally got my bike running again put in the the piston and ring and adjusted the timing I would just say that the timing is one of the hardest things I have ever done to a motorcycle
many times going to look up information on the forum
the best advice I got though was from Mark to purchase a ohmmeter with the value of 1 on it after that it went well
just one question does anyone know how long does it take to break in a new piston & ring I have always heard one tank of fuel some say 1 hour any and all advice is appreciated
thanks

I would just start out slow and dont put much stress on the engine and dont over rev it. I would think two tanks of gas. Be sure not to use any sythetic oil. You can over oil it a bit also, maybe like 25to1. Did you notice if the timing was off?

I am running premix gas and injected gas as well for the first tank I want to be sure everything below gets good oil since I washed the bottom with gas and the seals get nice and lubed changed to a colder plug not sure on the timing because I didn’t check it before I moved the points wish I did that was a real pain timing seems to run ok I have a carburetor rebuild kit coming in today so I will rebuild the carburetor and keep my fingers crossed that the piston holds up
Since it took a standard piston that tells me it took a very long time to burn the hole
At least that’s what I am hoping for
Soon I will be getting a temperature gauge that way I can monitor the head temperature and if it starts getting to hot then I can just pull over and let her cool down

You know when doing the carb squirt carb cleaner through all the little passages. Also check your plug after you ride a little and make sure it's not super dry and white. A lean engine will haul ass but hole the piston. So you want it to kinda load up on oil and then when its broke in then you can run it harder to burn off all that oil that loads up in the ring and crankcase.

Thanks Frank
I will check the plug periodically to see what’s going on
Just before the piston burned up I would say about 10 miles
I put 16 ounces of Castro with bean oil in the injection tank
I am wandering if that played a roll in the piston giving out?
to be on the safe side I am going to drain it and pick up some old fashion two cycle oil pretty sure it was synthetic but at 10 dollars a jug it probably was I will use that oil on my 1992 rt180
I don’t ride as hard as I used to I have learned to take care of my bikes as long as I can keep my son off of them they should last a long time

In the owner's manuals I have Yamaha says 500 miles. But that is a completely fresh motor all new out of the factory. The manuals say to keep the RPMs under 4000 for the first 100 miles, under 5000 next 150 miles and under 6000 until 500 miles is reached. After 500 miles it just says not to run prolonged full throttle in the red zone. This is for the 76 DT400C. I believe my Rt1 manual says same or very similar. That's how I've broke in all my Yamaha rebuilds. No extra oil mixture either. Use the Yamalube oil and pump. No mention by Yamaha to run it extra rich for break-in.

Caster oil does not mix well with any other oil, that may have been a problem.

Yes it kinda coincidental I dumped the oil in the injection 10 miles or so later hole in piston
I going to dump it out and get some old fashion two stroke oil for it
Just in case that was part out it
Thanks
