The underside of the Pan is in great Shape-  The Top side looks bad but is just the usual surface Rust that is common-    Hit with some penetrating spray to get things moving-

And of coarse the bolts that attached the seat hardware were all rust welded in and even with penetrating oil and heat they would not budge and most just broke off in hole...

So will just drill them out and rethread the attached nuts on pan and add new bolts to reattach hardware

Will get after everything with the wire wheel then will be applying a two good coats of the Duplicolor Rust Barrier Paint then will finish up with two good coats of the Eastwood Chassis Paint I use for my Frame Paint on the entire pan-  New Foam and Cover are Ready to be put on as soon as fully cured.

Hey all-

Just a quick update....  Been away from the shop last couple of weeks preparing for Spring and Summer here in East Texas-  I have been working  around our property to clean up our back wooded area that has not been touch I am guessing for many years!

Being from Colorado previously- we would NEVER be doing any type of outdoor burning- So I am having a great time down here as fire is easily contained- God Bless Texas!

Anyway- I will be getting back to this project soon with some updates and pics coming soon-  Stay Tuned!

Greg, did you ever get the Hodaka fender from DC?
What are your thoughts on it?

Are you going to Lab Metal the top of the seat pan? Or just truck bed liner paint it.
Inquiring minds want to know.
( P.S- love the fire and pitchfork picture.)

Hey Rick-

Yes I ordered and received the Gray Plastic Hodaka Front Fender form DC Plastics.

It is an EXCELLENT shape and very original looking for the DT1 / RT1 Mx'ers!

Also- I will be painting this plastic fender the nice Silver gloss.

The orginal Metal MX Front Fender always looked to short and stubby for my liking.... :)

I decided to cut it the same length as the stock "metal" enduro fender which was about 5" as it looks to me in most photos that Yamaha may have just used the same Metal Low fender they put on the Enduro's just minus the mounting flanges that are the stock fender

Anyway- I am going to use this fender on a 1970 RT1 project bike I have to build it out as a RT1 MX look.

Here it is just the mocked up on this bike- still have a little more shaping to do on the bottom cut but it is very close to where I need it.

As far as the Seat Pan- It is in great shape and not rust thru... just a combination of surface crude and surface rust... going to wire wheel it to clear as much as I can then will spray the top side with a good Rust Inhibitor paint- I really like and have used the Duplicolor Rust Inhibitor paint and has worked great to stop any current or new rust from developing - then I will use the East Wood Chassis paint on the bottom of pan for the nice gloss finish.

Looks great Greg!

Here's an option I always thought would be great if someone wanted to go with metal.

How well did the Eastwood Chassis paint lay over the stock frame? Did you spray it straight over the old finish after prepping?

edit: I just saw the prev pics.

Pabdt-

It worked great... I just thoroughly cleaned the frame first... then I took a scuff Pad to go over the entire frame just to knock off the original gloss and also until everything felt smooth by hand.  The original paint serves as a great base primmer coat once just the gloss it taken off

Then did a final wipe down with Isopropyl Alcohol on a clean rag to remove wipe everything down to prep for first coat.

Then I sprayed the first coat with the Eastwood Chassis paint very light- just enough to semi cover everything... let that fully cure and then repeat the process with scuff pad and wipe down with the alcohol and apply the second a bit heavier to fully cover everything... Let that cure an then hit it with the 3rd coat just spray a nice even coat to give you the perfect smooth Gloss finish.

Be SURE to let everything dry and fully cure between each coat.... Anyway that is my process and the parts turned out Excellent!

Greg, I agree on the fender always looking too short but that is part of what made me fall in love with the badge bike MXs. I am very lucky to have original fenders on my 70 and 71 DT1MX and they are perfect. The reason most are gone is if you did actually ride them in the day with the originals, they cracked and fell apart immediately. No one had the originals on their bikes when I raced in the early 70s and there was a really good reason for that! As always love your projects makes me think of the good old Yamaha Enduro.com days. I was lucky enough to save a few of those articles on paper thank goodness, those things were worth their weight in gold.

Replied by Reed valve Richards on topic GFrench- Another 1971 DT250 Enduro Restoration

That eastwood paint looks good, does it really hold up to chips and gasoline well ? I usually find only 2K urethane seems to be tough enough. Sure looks good !
