New project 1970 DT1C basket case was created by DaveinSC

And so it begins, again! Picked this basket case up today, hoping to make a running dirt bike out of it on the cheap. It was advertised as a 68 on marketplace but when I got there and checked the numbers it wasn’t. Wish it was a 68 but when it wasn’t it reduced the buying price a good bit. I took a quick inventory of the parts and the only thing I see missing is the wrist pin bearing. It came with a freshly bored cylinder and new piston, rings and wrist pin but for some reason no bearing. As bad as it looks it does have a few things going for it, the tires and rims are in great condition, has a torque engineering whispering smith exhaust and a vape ignition system for it. The crank feels and sounds pretty good and it shifts through the gears so that’s a plus. The seat is decent but the frame on the bike had the hinges cut off and it came with an MX 250 aluminum tank. Would like to find the right tank and need a rear fender too. I think with a set of gaskets, seals and a 55 gallon drum of elbow grease it could be a runner in no time.

Nice! Looks like a great find! Bonus that you got the price down!

They say "knowledge is power" but in your case knowledge is getting a great project at a discounted price!

Glad he didn’t :) I contacted him within hours of the listing and he said he would be out of town until the weekend but I could see it then. I was kind of worried someone else would be wanting it just because it was advertised as a 68. Even though it’s a 70 I still wanted it, everything is in good shape and it wasn’t left outside to rot like the the DT360 I did over the summer. The old Yamaha enduros are scarce in this area so I was happy to get it. One thing that might have helped me from him responding to other buyers was I told him about fixing up the 360 and that I wasn’t just going to part it out on ebay

Made some progress in the last two days, mostly a lot of cleaning. Got the engine case all cleaned up and put back in the frame, the carburetor is done, took the pegs and skid plate off and touched up some of the frame paint. Got the cables done but need to work on the throttle, not returning like it should. It has a nice set of Magura controls with the dust boots. I think it’s the handle bar hasn’t got enough clearance for the grip tube, it’s already been sanded down but not enough. Stated sorting out the ignition and exhaust situation so once the wrist pin bearing and gasket set gets here I can try to fire it up. I’m not liking the tank but it’s what I have for now so will work with it until I find something better.

I have two 1970 DT1C gas tanks. They are getting very hard to find. Both tanks have dents but are fixable. Text me at 480 797-7716. I am parting out both bikes.

Wow.. looks pretty darn good! Nice progress. If you decide to sell that tank I have a later 250 it would look good on. :)

I’ve been working on this one and a 1972 AT125 at the same time but finally got my crappy eBay gas tank fixed and painted. It was supposed to have one pin hole in it but once I stripped all the duct tape and paint off I found it was riddled with holes. I used the solder method, it seemed to work very good. I think the trick to it is having it very clean and I use ruby fluid for the flux. All the holes were on the bottom so I was able to leave the solder pretty thick since it wouldn’t be seen. There was a couple dents that needed filling too. I took it for a short ride today, it was 80 degrees in SC. The tank painting was an absolute nightmare. the first time I had it in primer then sprayed it black for the stripe then masked the stripe and painted it a nice white. All was perfect until I went for a second coat and the white got several wrinkled areas. I tried to get them out but they just kept coming back so ended up stripping it all down again. Next time I used a 2k primer, I picked up 5 cans at the auction for 5 dollars! I bought some duplicolor pearl white paint and a can of 2k clear. So everything was perfect again, I was finished but thought one side needed a little more clear coat. I picked up the wrong can and spayed the white over the black stripe! So now I figured I’ll let it dry awhile and sand it off. I put a towel in my lap and started wet sanding the white off the stripe. It was pretty easy to get it off but imagine my horror when I went to pick up the tank and the towel was stuck to the other side! I peeled it off and it left a wooly mess stuck to it. After an hour of wet sanding I was able to get 99 percent of it off, re taped the stripe painted that side again and spent the rest of my clear on it. Not the job I was hoping for but it’s good enough for the gals we go with. Still need to work on the autolube, I have the pump and cable now, have a new clutch cover gasket to put on while I’m down there too.

Another job that needed doing was the rear fender. Bought this one on eBay
That wasn’t too bad to fix up but when I went to put it on is when I figured out the PO had cut the back bar off and shortened it. So I had to rebuild the whole thing to get the stock fender to bolt on again.
