Hello all,

I stumbled upon this site when an internet search turned up @enduronut 's serial number list for 70 & 80 cc Yamahas.  Thanks much enduronut, for sharing this info, though I am still somewhat confused.

I'm really not much for two strokes myself but I remember all the fun our kids had on this way back then, hand-me-down  Yamaha 's what I always called it.

(I'm hoping the picture shows up?)

Some of our grandkids are getting big enough to straddle the bike so I thought it was time to dig it out of the corner and let another generation have at this little yellow screamer.   I'm a long time gear-head and recently restored a K1 CB750 that I bought new in 1971 as well as a 1973 XLH 1000 Sportster that I've owned for decades; so I believe I have the requisite skills to resurrect the little mini.  I'm hoping to find the necessary information and assistance I'll need right here.

For starters, Enduronut's serial number list seems to show this bike (s/n 367-109XXX) is a 1974 GTMXA but from what little I've gathered recently I'm thinking it looks more like a GT80A.  Is this possible with a 367 s/n prefix?

The bike was quite well used when it was given to me back in the 1980s and it wasn't very "civilized" back then.  As I recall, neither the kick starter nor the oil injection system ever worked so we just always bumped started it and mixed two stroke fuel and oil for the gas tank.  I'd like to get both of these issues resolved.

Any answers, advice, or suggestions will be much appreciated
ZT

For some reason, my picture is not being displayed. I noticed a 2023 message advising the forum picture feature not working but I would think that issue should be fixed by now. I also saw a "Note" stating BBcode is still working. I tried that but got a message that my picture was removed as I am "not allowed" to.

Can anyone tell me what's going on?
Thanks! ZT

If I recall a recent post from another new member correctly, I think that a certain number of posts are required before new members can post images. MarkT will confirm.

The photo uploading issue is still unresolved, so we use third party sites such as Imgur.

I asked the site owner and he confirmed that he blocked link posting for new members due to attempts at spamming and scam links from people that just joined.

Thanks "Unc"!

I generally use IMGbb but it didn't work. I'll try again after a few posts. A picture is worth a thousand words especially when your trying to find out what something is.

Do you know anything about serial numbers? Can a Competition Yellow 1974 GT80A come from the factory with a 367 s/n prefix?

Thanks! ZT

Thanks MarkT!  But would you tell the owner I'm OK and just looking for some help with my Yamaha 80?

I appreciate your follow-up!

To answer your question, there is very little difference between a GT1, GT80, and GTMX...  paint color changed and the 73 GT1 and 74-on GT80 came with lights while the GTMX versions were simply stripped of "street gear".   There are some carb differences on later models (presumably for US emissions) but most parts are interchangeable for about 10 years of production.

In my experience and opinion, there is zero chance your 367 VIN prefix bike was not an "MX" when it was first sold.  But there is also nothing I can think of that would prevent a previous owner or you from adding the lights, etc from the GT80 to the MX model if that's what you want.

One note is in the 1990's there was a huge "pocket bike" fad...  in response, some states banned smaller bikes from being registered and used on the street... and this might include older bikes like the JT-L and GT80 models that could possibly have been registered for street use when new...  Probably not an issue if the bike was previously registered and titled for the street?  But I know someone that had a GT80 that had "fallen off the books" in his state and when he tried to get a plate for it, the inspector said it was below the size requirement for street use.  Just something to check if you plan on trying to get it street legal.

P.S. I'm not sure if the owner can "unblock" an individual new user?  By the time he gets my message and has a chance to get around to trying, you could easily get your 10 posts in or so to remove the block.

Thanks again Mark, for your thoughtful reply which has cleared up all my confusion. I don't know why but my "mind's eye image" of the GT80 and GTMX was bas-ackwards1 Mine is definitely the stripped down version with no battery or electrical system; which makes it a 1974 GTMXA just as Enduronut's list and my s/n confirm.

Thanks for the welcome Ht1Kid.  MarkT has already helped solve the first mystery and have I've downloaded a 73 GT80 Service Manual and several how-to articles applicable to the GT80/GTMX.  Can anyone provide or direct me to a downloadable Parts List for a 1974 GTMX?

And, as long as I'm here, thought I'd try posting my GTMXA   (fingers crossed!)
