Congratulations!

Don't feel bad at all. It's really hard to see the points cam "bump" and with an unfamiliar disassembled bike and all the wrong parts you were dealing with it was an easy conclusion to come to. I saw the same "illusion" when I was taking the pictures. :Buds

(And I'm sure I'm not alone here when I admit I've had too many of those "DOH!" moments to count while working on these bikes.)

Even though this post is two years old I just wanted to say thank you very very much for the post and the pictures in the diagram because I too am very new at this and it helped me extremely much today I got this old 1973 started for the first time since I got it six weeks ago....now I can tear it down an rebuild
