The importance of that little bearing ball in your clutch pushrod assembly... was created by Kosmo
I figured the thread where this all started was titled too obscure for how much attention I wanted to bring to this...so...new thread!
Here's the original for some context but also a quick summary below: www.yamaha-enduros.com/index.php/forums/...125-dt175-conversion
My friend's DT125 developed an air leak, RPMs shot up during an accidental downshift into 1st and it cooked his clutch. This has happened to me before with no issues so I was very confused as to how the almighty indestructible DT succumbed to this incident. My initial assumption before teardown was that the previous owner (confirmed to have been inside the engine) forgot the bearing ball that goes between the 2 clutch pushrods and the pushrods just friction welded upon high RPM contact.
So...imagine my face when I finally punched out the push rod from the main shaft and it had a bearing ball welded onto its tip...
Now...imagine my face when I found shrapnel indicative of a SECOND bearing ball...
Lightbulb went off, I put myself in the shoes of a stable genius, and that led me to figuring out that the pushrod that was used in that engine was actually shorter than factory spec.
So basically, instead of losing the bearing ball like any normal person would, this guy decided to make up for the lack of pushrod length (likely after figuring out his clutch doesn't disengage fully) with a second bearing ball which created just as much of a scenario for disaster as losing it would. But still...gotta appreciate the creative approach.
The overall damage was pretty significant I would say. Pushrods, main shaft, main shaft bearings were COOKED...clutch arm cam damaged from the pushrod ramming into it...wasn't fun to see.
But all is well that ends well I suppose:
