Eliminate bead locks? was created by seven4eight

Unfortunately the search function is not working for some reason.
Has anyone else removed the bead locks on the factory rear wheel and plugged / sealed the holes? Bike is a 1973 DT3, has (2) factory beadlocks. Thanks

Shouldn't be a problem for the road. Just get a rubber bung or something that isn't protrusive sticking up.

I've heard of people putting a 6mm screw through the rim , and a nut to secure it .

No problem at all to leave them out. Surely don't need two of them in there.

If you truly enjoy pushing your motorcycle, because the valve stem has been torn off of course you can remove the tire tube wheel locks. There is a reason that there are two wheel locks on the rear tire and one on the front. If you get into a situation where you have to give it full throttle and let the clutch out to avoid a car smashing into you maybe it’s perhaps worth it not to have it but under normal circumstances I would always run the wheel locks and I would recommend running the wheel locks because they’re put there to keep from tearing off the valve stem Schrader valve.

I cut old tire tube little further around their air valve and placed them there , use little loctite on the caps (coloured alu. air caps for easier notice next time when re-air the tire)

Bead loks for low pressure tire pressure on mx bikes with high torque.

To reply to Asco, how is it possible I've ridden a DR650 20k plus miles and never ripped a valve stem out? It doesn't have bead locks.
I found 2 8mm flat phillips style bolts at hardware store, sealed on both ends with a rubber washer and a nylock nut. Seems to work great. Thanks

Modern bike most likely has aluminum rims, almost certainly with sharp serrations inside the rim lips to help keep the tire from slipping...

Not quite the same as a very slick chromed steel wheel.

In any case, if you don't run low pressures you'll probably be fine.
