Hey guys.

I think im missing a sprint that goes on the high low pushrod in the 3 speed trailmatic.

the problem is delayed shift between low high range.

The parts diagram looks like there’s a spring on both sides but mine only has a spring on one side. I don’t think I can bench test it I think it needs to be running to work properly but I’m not sure.

I'm not super familiar with the dual range model.  From the diagram it looks like the "high/low" selector is a ball-lock design.  Basically the selector pushes the pin in or lets it pop back out and grooves in the pin release and lock the balls to let one gear freewheel and the other lock to the shaft for high or low gear range.

A missing spring could definitely be a problem.  especially if it's used to push the pin out.

Or the selector might mechanically pull the pin in and out?  I don't know.

But I forgot to mention that you should be able to bench test the high/low on the bench just fine without the engine running.  Worst case you'll have to spin the sprocket a little.

Never had one apart back in the day but the shaft is spring loaded against a cam shaped cap knob thingy therefor its always under spring pressure. So needs a spring the far end for sure. Similar to YG1 gearchanging except theirs was mechanical push pull for 4 speeds.

Yes, it looked from the parts like it was spring loaded instead of push-pull.  Thanks Morley!

Thanks guys.

40 dollaes later I have ordered a spring.

Pricey but I assume the springs need to be somewhat similar.

I think the missing spring explains why it would delay.

hope this fixes it.

cheers guys.

You’re telling me haha. Yeah new old stock from USA to Australia. 20 for spring and 20 shipping haha poor me.

For a bike I got for free I certainly know how to spend money on it haha

But mechanically speaking everything is new now.

small point looking at parts but should be 4 speed just counting the gears. I had an L2CA 50 years ago for dad on the farm & L5TA took over with smaller frame & wheels. L2CA had 18's & tall frame, good bike & mechanically the same.
