1973 DT3 Lighing, wiring, battery and voltage questions

I recently purchased my first enduro which is a 1973 DT3. The bike does not have a battery, the front headlight is missing but the wiring is still there no blinkers, and no tail lights. Basically nothing but a bunch of wires everywhere. The electrical is my biggest problem with the bike as everything else works so it's mostly just maintenance. I have many questions about this and am looking for some help and opinions.

My problem is that I don't necessarily like the looks of the original lights, they are a little bulky for me. But when looking for a better style of light I find that they are all 12V bulbs. Is there any way to run 12V lights on a 6V battery reliably? I also have looked into converting the whole bike to 12V but that is expensive and may be overkill. I am just not quite sure what to do as I need lights and at least blinkers on the back. Any input would be great.

You can put any lighting system on it you want, and then change the bulbs to 6v bulbs. For instance, a 12v 1157 bulb is a 6v 1154. Fits the same tail light socket.

Does anybody know what is going on here? I do not know really anything about the wiring but this just doesn't look right to me. I am not sure what I need to get the lights on this bike again.

Find the wiring diagram in the Tech Library above in the toolbar, and the it's all color coded. If you buy turn signals, they will be a certain color (in the diagram). Tail light will be another color. Headlight is obviously the tri-plug at the top. And so on...
You can do it.

Try octane lighting on the net they have 5and 3.4 LED headlights that work and fit the bucket and you can get LED signal lights everywhere and then install a 6 volt regulator and it will work beautifully.

Thank you both so much, I don't know what I would do without this forum haha. Run103, if I make all of the lights LED can I run one 6V regulator off the battery or would I need a regulator for each light?

I run a regulator and no battery. I cant keep them from either cooking the acid out or vibrating it out so I do not use one All I have is tail light and brake light and headlight with High low We do not need signal lights here in Sask Canada They do like you to have a horn though. You can do signal lights with the 6 volt regulator and they work fine . I wish I could find a no maintenance battery for these bikes but I havn't yet. The lead acid works just not very long.

On a DT3, the production date will likely be before 1/1/73... (sticker on steering head).

If so, technically in the US you didn't need to have turn signals. Some states are different though.

So what I gather is that in order to have turn signals I need a battery but if I just want lights and brake lights I just need a regulator? Also, I found this 6V battery has anyone used one of these?

Lithium Ion can be a problem for these old electrical systems. The MotoBatt MBT6N4 is what I have in my DT3 and RT3 regular riders. Some are 5 years old.
The hours spent riding my Enduros is not deducted from my life span.
