GT 80 service manual was created by Papawhellie
I was wondering if someone had a manual they could share with me via google drive or post a link. Mines a 1978. Thanks

The 80's didn't change much at all over many, many years. The earlier manual in the Tech Library here should cover your 78 pretty well.

Here's a link to "page 2" where the GT80 manual is hiding.

Thanks so much Mark. You are an incredible knowledge base from my reading here and on YE. I see it takes the 2a6-81321-20-00 or drop 00 on end. This set only fits a few models and not older 80s. Did the rotor size change on these in 74 also? Any recommendations on a good set with condenser on budget.

Partzilla seems to show a "Generator" change in 1978 at a certain VIN number. Can't really tell what points it takes but don't see the 2a6 number for either year GT80?
I see now.... those 2a6 points are shown for the GTMX, not the GT80.
(2a6 would be same points as later DT125/175)
I'm not sure what you're working on or what the problem is but in my experience it's not that common to need to replace points. I don't touch the condenser unless it needs one because I've had too many new condensers fail... Original Yamaha condensers are expensive but seem to work better and more reliably than the aftermarket ones.
Option on condenser is to remove the one on the stator and use an automotive one up at the ignition coil... Years ago I used to use Ford or VW condensers at the coil because I had used VW ones and the Ford ones were cheap and easy to find. For performance I used the large Mallory condensers up by the coil as recommended by a magazine article I read when I was a kid.... still have a couple of those Mallorys someplace.. Lately I haven't really needed to replace a condenser.
Yamaha did sometimes change parts suppliers over the years... but functionally the ignitions are the same. I don't know the specifics of what they changed, if anything, on the GT80 ignitions from 74-78. Sometimes Partzilla can help or I like to look for pictures of parts on ebay and compare... have to be a little careful because parts are often swapped over the years but if you can find pictures of a few for sale, with the Partzilla info it usually becomes obvious what's what.

P.S. Looked at Partzilla and the 207 points they show are the same for the 1973 GT1 and the 74-79 GT80... as well as a lot of other common Yamaha models like the CT, HT, JT magnetos.

So is there a way to check the condenser with a meter on capacitance, or old school watching the needle rise and then fall back? I have a few old Ford FE capacitors, can tell me how to hook it at the coil? The bike ran and it would just cut off and not crank. The points are pretty worn. It’s been in the barn a few years and a tenant of mine likes fooling with bikes so I put him in the game.
