DT400 US history was created by p.wells

Hi all, My DT400B 1975 was imported from the US to the UK about three years ago. I am trying to trace which state in the US the bike came from, purely to satisfy my interest in the history of my bike. Would anyone have any ideas on how I can find information on this?

If it was recently registered in the US before being exported you could try entering the VIN at a site like CycleVIN.

Note that most states don't use dashes or spaces in a VIN and an 0 or 1 should always be a number, not a letter. But you can try various iterations of the VIN in the search. CycleVIN will only try to sell you a report if they find records on file.

Many old bikes here have been "off the books" long enough that the DMV registration records have been purged so CycleVIN has no records but you might get lucky.

If you can't run the VIN from the UK, send it to me and I'll try to run it for you.

You might also try a letter to Yamaha USA... I've heard sometimes they can be helpful and even though their records are not that complete they might be able to tell you what dealer the bike was shipped to when new. Can't hurt to ask.

Hello Mark

Thank you for your reply I will give those options a go and see how I get on, although I have a feeling the bike has not been used for a while because when I purchased it back in 2018 and started to strip it down I found some sort of rodent nest in the air box which contained loads of seeds of some kind and apparently it was a barn find. Anyway if I am unable to find out any information from here in the UK I will take you up on your kind offer and send you the VIN number . Kind Regards Peter Wells.
