Oil injection pump?....or not? was created by yamahammer

I'm beginning a rebuild on a really rough 1973 MX250 that's been sitting for years.
It still has the oil pump and bottle.
Some say the injected 2 stroke oil pumps did more damage then good.
Any personal experience or knowledge of..............is appreciated.
Take it off and mix manually?
Or leave it on for authenticity?
Thanks

Autolube works great. DEET here rebuilds pumps.

Having it intact on an MX of that era is super rare... I'd leave it. In any case don't lose the parts! Pumps might be somewhat available but the tank is super rare.

Yamahammer,

One just kind of wonders if that bike was ever raced or not...it's got passenger pegs bolted on the swingarm, just like many of the Enduros of the day did. Good luck with the restoration. When you have finished, you'll find that the engine need to be screaming to make any power or torque, it will stall easily if not careful. When I had my bike restored, I bought an 8oz flywheel weight which made the bike scads more tractable and rideable. Oh, on the picture the header pipe looks really cooked. It was painted with hi-temp barbeque paint before the race. It was my last race (age 61), and it was a District 38 Desert Race, the "Rattlesnake Chase" held in the SoCAl desert near Superstition Mountain, between San Diego and El Centro.

Here in Australia the throttle cable cost over $200. I run without the oil pump, but should a suitable cable come my way, I will connect the pump.

Did that cable have a pretty upmarket screw top alloy cable junction box, good quality looking cable all around with spring thing to keep exhaust heat off the cable etc. Can't remember if i took mine off from new but most likely as were trying to reduce weight. Nothing wrong with premix, just gotta remember to mix it--sign on the tank, mix only.

An option or two maybe, for with or without pump. couldn't find a genuine top cable though.

I destroyed my first piston/rings w/my 125 using the pump. The cable snapped to the oil pump and I didn't know it.
Bye bye piston rings. Cylinder lived. Seems like a good setup if you keep your eye on the system and maintenance it.

I say make sure its setup properly and putting the right oil volume out and use it and in my case the cable is existing and adjusted.
