Bike registration Calif. was created by FrankC
Ok so I want to register my bike. Went to California DMV and they said they no longer do that there. I asked why and they said when cobic ends. Great so that's never. Also no lurners permits either. I went on line and the DMV calculator said I owe almost 900 bucks for registration fees. My bike has not been registered since 2009. My question is did they calculate that right. My yearly registration is only 105 dollars. If not how do I get it straightened out or who to call or email. Want to ride my bike. Thank you.

Unfortunately in California if a previous owner failed to file a notice of planned non-operation and pay the $20 fee by the due date, the expired registration fees add up very quickly. They top out at 3 years back fees, then tripled because of penalties, so the $900 figure you are seeing is likely pretty accurate. The only ways to avoid paying those fees at this point would be to find a shop that will do a lien sale and start the registration process anew (typically about $300 and several months processing time), or take the bike out of state and register it elsewhere (I've heard that New Hampshire or Vermont may register it without the bike physically being there, everybody else will require you to bring it to them for inspection first).
Without paying those back fees California will not process any transfers, replace any title paperwork, or reregister the bike. The old registration used to drop out of the DMV's computers after 5-7 years and there would be no record anymore, but over the past decade they have stopped doing that, they now want to collect their money from whoever has that bike even 10 or 20 years later. Expired registration in California is a very expensive problem.

It sounds like your bike was still in the system
I just bought 2 bikes last week . One is a 72 XL 250 and the other DT360. Both bikes were registered last in 1984. The 360 had a non op on it. It didn’t matter cause both bikes were out of the system. CHP needs to verify both of my bikes. It’s going to cost me 135.00 each for registration. Still too much imo. Cost of living in Ca. The key is to non op if they aren’t going to be in use.

Thank you gentleman. Sounds like the cost is correct so I feel much happier to pay the bill.

In the UK you now have to complete a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) and, I think, can be fined if you don't. No backdated tax though, unless you get caught using an untaxed vehicle on the road.
