Loosey goosey was created by Misumena

Hey guys!

I hope everyone is enjoying spring so far!

The exhaust manifold on my CT2 is loose, it wiggles around a little bit and causes an exhaust leak right at the cylinder head every once and a while. With only one mounting point under the seat and only one spring to hold the exhaust tight to the cylinder, my exhaust manifold sure likes to wiggle and jiggle.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can secure the manifold a bit better to the bike? Or am I just missing something obvious??

Thanks guys!!

Should it not have two springs and two frame mounting points - one roughly by the toolbox and one higher up near the shock absorber?

It's a slip joint so it will never be 100% fixed to the head like a 4 stroke. The looseness beyond typical most likely would be the grommet where the pipe mounts under the seat is fatigued/rotten/wrong/missing (P/N 168-21638-00-00, they are on ebay). There is a string "gasket" that should be in the slip joint's base, and after 48 years its either squashed beyond use or missing (248-14623-00-00). Also, the gasket under the pipe flange mount on the head could be missing/squashed, it's also available, 152-14613-00-00.

It's a 1 spring at the cylinder mount in front, and the grommeted mount under the seat. That's it. The grommet under the seat needs to be solid or the pipe gets wonky.

Does it have the "string" seal at the cylinder head? It packs between the flange and muffler. If not you can get one from Yamaha or use high temp RTV silicone, lay out a long bead of it on some wax paper, let it dry, peel it off and use that as the string.

Edit: whew the responses are fast these days!

AWESOME!! Thank you so much! that helps me out a ton!! This is such a reliable place for information!!
I have both of the gaskets you mentioned apex. The grommet under the seat is crusted out and old ahahah, definitely could be replaced!
do you have any tips on installing the string gasket? Should I use the whole thing or is just one wrap around enough?

the responses are fast Darin!! im trying to keep up! and yes i do have the string gasket! just need the grommet for under the seat! I wonder if an Erlenmeyer flask rubber stopper with a hole in it would work? That is quite tough rubber...
