New to motorcycles in general, need advice was created by ikaika-spar10
Hello all, Happy to be here because I have just acquired my first bike ever and I believe it to be a 1974 Yamaha dt250a (9 digit is 450-02077x). I bought it on facebook marketplace for a good deal but the guy said he couldnt get it to run for long but could get it to start. I started taking it apart today and noticed a lot of parts seem to be from other bikes (the seat, carb, exhaust) I have not got around to trying to start it yet but i have the carb that was on it soaking in pinesol. The carb that came on it is a mikuni 2a6/00 carb which seems to be what would be on a 1978 dt125 or something similar. the exhaust i cant identify but it seems to be two pieces that are held together by metal wire and its orange which is the same color as the tank that's currently on it with a 125 sticker on the side of it, so im gonna assume all of these parts came from some sort of dt125. My major question though right now is should I even try to get the bike running with these parts or should I try to source actual original parts or at least closer stuff. original carbs from this year seem to sell for 500$ plus on ebay which is insane so would a Mikuni vm28 carb work? whatever I do I think im gonna have to run it on premix as I don't have an oil tank. im a noob at this stuff lol.

Welcome to the forum.
The most important thing is knowing how and where to do your research. You seem to be doing fine there.
As for your mix n match bike.... You will never get good performance from the wrong carb and exhaust, unless they were specifically tuned to your motor. You can also easily cause substantial engine damage.

premix is easy enough, but I agree w/tinkicker, probably pickup a stock exhaust and carb if poss or VM28.
Also, how about a pic using imgur.

Agreed. However, site is set up to only allow image uploads after a member has made at least a dozen or so posts (helps prevent spammers and bots etc).

Technically, the temporary block stops the posting of any link to stop scammers and spammers that would occasionally sneak in and post garbage links in the middle of the night.
