74 DT100 carb question was created by unclejtl

good morning, so yesterday I got this 74 DT100 to fix up for my wife. it's missing a few things, mainly the intake/carb, side covers and air filter cover and 1/2 of the petcock. it does still have the slide, cap, needle, spring attached

my question is... I've seen carbs on ebay from $30 and up brand new. now mind you, i'd rather have an original mikuni, but I have a lot to buy for this bike, so I need to keep some of my costs on single items down a bit. does anyone have a line on a good aftermarket/original? I did find a deal on the intake boot on ebay.

also, I have been looking at gasket sets. what would be the difference between 1974 and 1976? also difference in models a,b,c,d,e,f?

the bike will be getting disassembled in the next few days.

thanks

Those Chinese knock-offs...some here say they are fine; some say not so much. Worst case scenario would be buy the Chinese cheap carb, gut the jets and other brass parts out of it, and replace those with Mikuni OEM's.

Looks like you need the reeds, too. Reed block is there, but reeds are not.

It looks like it's all there, and shipping is free. To buy a used one needing rebuilt on ebay is usually $50-$60 or more plus shipping, and by the time you buy all the new internals that it's going to need, it'll add up in a hurry. Seems OK to me.

And on the reeds...I have a two reed bikes, but i have never fooled with them at all, other than to clean them. Can't advise there.

Some of the Chinese knock offs have odd ball threads and you can't swap to Mikuni jets.... if you get one, check that first and return it right away before trying it.

Most seem to be close copies so the jets do interchange.

This is true. I'd never bought a Chinese replacement, and needed a carb for an AT2, so I thought for the price, why not give it a shot.

Threads are different, Mikuni jets won't fit. Pilot jet is different too, Mikuni won't fit. The most interesting thing I found out on a test ride is the slide rises high enough during WOT that the slide disengages the small "nubbin" I'll call it that keeps the slide from rotating, and...you guessed, it, the slide rotated and stuck WOT. That's happened twice. "Otherwise" the carb works just fine! Just forget about tuning...

As ever...learning something new every day.

But is that a Chinese knock-off? It is stamped Mikuni...first picture, top between the fuel inlet and the choke/enricher knob...

Even though it's through Amazon, seller is Niche Cycle Supply who are, I believe, a US company.
