12V conversion headlamp was created by Yamalol

Just ordered a 12v conversion kit for my 74 DT250. Hoping this finally gives me reliable, bright lighting. I think the 12v regulator/rectifier that comes with the kit would mean I could power a 12v LED from the new lighting coil since the current will be DC after the regulator/rectifier? Anyway, does anyone who has done the conversion have headlight recommendations, LED or otherwise? Thanks.

what "conversion kit" are you installing?

H4 5 3/4" reflector/lens assemblies are fairly common and can take different bulbs.

Currently using this shell , and this bulb .

Also wondering about a 12v battery that will fit.

Ah, that doesn't quite fit. My width maxes out at 2 inches. All the other dimensions work. Too bad batteries aren't listed by dimensions, haha.

On my 77 I used Octane Lighting's 5 3/4" headlight housing and swapped out the bulb that came with it with an LED bulb from Superbrightleds.com. I have had the headlight installed for around 10 months now and really like the light it puts out. As for my battery, I used the MB3U from MotoBatt and it lists the width as 2.20 inches.

That 12 V conversion is just what I'm looking for on my DT250A Refurb...but the link you have shows a 6v bulb, maybe they work on 12vdc as well but shows bulb failure of 12Vdc applied....

Quick update: had beautiful weather this past weekend, so I got the 12v conversion kit installed!

Installing the new lighting coil was very straightforward. I had to mount the new regulator/rectifier behind the headlamp because it was too big to fit on the old mounting spot under the tank. I probably could have reconfigured things to make it fit, but it looked good enough. Had to extend some wires a bit, but no problems otherwise.

I ended up trying that Pillsbury posted since it was the cheapest option. I modified my battery box by taking the side wall down in order to get the battery to fit. I pulled the rubber mouth of the air box off too, but wasn't using that anyway (photo below).

I am currently using this headlight , and it works pretty well. I am still powering the headlight off the battery (I like the key-on headlight), so I might experiment with an LED as well.

Definitely worth the investment. Now I feel like I can ride my DT250 like a real motorcycle and not have to head home when the sun goes down. Happy to answer any questions.

DT250 with a 12V converstion:

Scannell
Was you bike fitted for larger battery? I roughly measured my battery case (4x4x2)ish. The MB3U is 5.8" tall. Was that an issue?

The Rex conversion kit recommends not to use LED bulb. Has anyone come across this? does it even matter as long its a 12v LED?

The MB3U battery is essentially the stock size for 1977 and I measured mine at 4.375 inches in height. My battery compartment is 4 3/4” high x 4” wide x 2” deep and with the rubber insert it fits perfectly. (Yours might be a different size being an older model)
