I am also late to see/respond to this post. You can use Metal Rescue gel on spots of rust. Make sure to cover the gel with a plastic sheet (1/2 of a ziplock style bag) and tape the edges to prevent drying of the gel. It will not harm paint, plastic or electrical. Will take it to bare metal where the rust was. might be a slow process depending on how many spots there are.
