DT175 1978 - bearing snap ring? was created by MikeK-uk

Hello again,
Slowly carrying on with my engine strip when time allows.
Another question if I may…
Is that a snap ring around the gearbox output shaft bearing?
Does it need to be removed before pulling the bearing?
I’m thinking it is and I don’t… but wanted to check.
Thank you!

Your assumptions are correct.

One thing to note is that if replacing you MUST get a bearing with the same exact numbers on it. It has a special radius and without that won't press into case completely. Sometimes even a Yamaha-supplied bearing is not correct. I can't really read your numbers but from memory an "N" suffix is for the snap ring and there is an "X2" suffix that denotes the special edge radius.

You might get it to work with a "regular" bearing but the gear shaft will be shifted over slightly and this can result in shifting issues and the gear on the clutch side of the shaft will rub on the case. I worked on one with maddening shift issues that no amount of adjusting would fix, finally noticed the gear was rubbing, and then noticed the bearing you have in your picture was not pressed in to where the snap ring contacted the case. It was rebuilt with a "generic" bearing without the special radius... a new correct bearing fixed it.

Thanks for that and the good tip on ensuring the replacement bearing is correct :-)

Here's what to look for...  the outer edge on the side opposite the snap ring has an extra large radius (chamfer)...  it's obvious when you compare the special bearing to one with the standard chamfer.

Without the extra clearance this chamfer provides, the bearing might not press into the case all the way...  forcing it would break the case.  I'm sure there is a reason...  probably strength...  that Yamaha didn't machine the case so that a standard bearing would work.

Great- thanks for the info and photo. I’m
using Yambits in uk for most my parts and I think they know what they are doing. But will carefully check when all my new bits arrive.
