Shifter shaft seal was created by dubepj

Fixing a 1973 RT3.  Just waiting on a carb gasket and a Petcock rubber. Put new oil in tranny and noticed a small leak at the shifter shaft seal.   Can I replace the seal without splitting  the  engine.  Sometimes you can pull old seal by screwing a screw and pulling it out??  Any advice is well come.

Yup it's just like you say, you can pull it out with a screw, pick, or modified screwdriver.

Thanks Darinm. Now I'll see if My Local Yamaha store has one. Should I drain oil first or can I just lean bike over??

I changed mine on my DT2 not long ago, was really easy and didn't have to lean bike over.  Make sure you clean you seat really well.

Might as well replace the shifter shaft seal while you're there.  Just a thought...

Previous owner already replaced all 3 but i guess he just didn't do a really good job on Countershaft one. I've checked other seals. Good to go.
