RT1 Gearbox was created by kitkatman
Hi Everyone,
Have finally got my RT1 back together to find when I try to start it, it jumps into gear (will start if I pull the clutch in) Also can only find 2 gears second and third I think.
I am thinking maybe gear selector mechanism or when I put the crankcases together I didn’t sett it in the neutral position correctly. What IS the correct position of the cam for assembly.
All help gratefully accepted.
Alan.

My guess it thd plunger & spring are still in the oil tray as the most likely cause. 21 & 22 images.cmsnl.com/img/partslists/yamaha-r...gyau0779b-2_5c3e.gif

Yamaha doesn't need to be assembled in a certain gear like say the old Husqvarnas did. Pretty hard to screw it up.
Detent is the best guess I can think of too...
Only other thing is these bikes are very hard to "bench shift". They don't like to shift unless things in the trans are spinning. Yamahas are also pretty good about not having "false neutrals" like an old Sachs 125 did. You can sometimes get it between gears while parked with engine off but once things start spinning, the Yamaha trans likes to go into gear.
So if you assembled in say 5th, you might not have downshifted it into first unless you roll the bike with the chain on and keep downshifting. So what you think is neutral might be you finding a "false neutral" between gears and then when things spin, it jumps into gear like Yamahas tend to do.
Make sure you are rolling the bike (chain on) and maybe have the engine running as you try to downshift all the way to first.

Other random thought 'is' if spring #26 gets of #27 & #28 'in my link' you'll be all at sea fishing for gears, so just a thought. Probably wouldn't have any gears but then again never know.
