Early '68 DT1 airbox question: What are people using for air filter material in the original airbox, if they are still using the box and have not gone to a pod-type?

When I first started to gather pieces for this semi-complete project I spotted an OEM air cleaner element and grabbed it, so for the "restoration" I have what I need. But I was wondering about a replacement

. Has anyone come up with a foam sock or similar that could be cleaned/oiled periodically?

I am considering getting some Filtron material and making something up that could be slipped over the old existing cage that could then be removed, washed/cleaned, and then re-oiled. If I went with a sheet of it it would of necessity have a meeting point that preferably be sealed permanent. Not sure I could accomplish that with any longevity.

Or do people insert a K&N filter inside the box somehow?

I wonder if the air filter for the DT and RT 2 and 3 from 1972 and 1973, which is still available from Yamaha, could be "persuaded" to fit?

The original "00" version comes dry, the recent "01" updated part comes ready oiled.

Hi Steve, you might want to check with your local Yamaha dealer. I bought the filter for my DT2 from them.

Steve, I re-use original 68 cage after removing the old paper element & install UNI NU-2203 foam, it fits like a glove over OEM wire cage. UNI is on ebay.
Good luck

Thanks!

I added the link... ebay USA has blocked "hotlinking" from other websites... remember how the auction preview used to show up?

When you post an ebay USA link here, forum software creates a direct link which ebay blocks so nothing shows.

You can insert an ebay USA link like I did with "chain link" icon as long as you use the ebay auction link as the URL and not the description.

P.S. I'm pretty sure UNI Filter is the "Filtron" started by the legendary dirt bike Ekins clan in the 1960's that made foam filters for dirt bikes... I'm not sure if the Filtron name was already in use overseas or if they got bought out or what... but the name changed in the early 70's if I remember correctly.

The Uni Filter comes with it's own cage . However it is a bit longer than the stock DT1E cage ,
8-10mm if I remember . On my DT1 , which still had the original cage , I just fitted the
Uni Filter element to my OEM cage , and all worked well .

The Uni NU-2203 yellow filter with cage is hit or miss as to if your bike will run good with it. Some bike just won't rev out because of how restricted the double foam is. I use stock cages with Uni filter BF-1 green foam and cut it to size, glue it so it slides over the stock cages and put a light film of air filter oil on it. This works great on all bikes.

I have a new NU-2203 with a cut down to size cage for $25.00 shipped in the states if someone wants it.
