Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and wanted to try to confirm I suppose the exact year of my son's motorcycle.  Question - My son was given a DT 250 Yamaha bike by my brother (bike was found in fishtail Montana on his property and not running (yet))...I think it's a 1970 but the tanks are faded gold in color.

The VIN is - DT1-61784

The only part that confuses me is the tank color I thought should be red for 1970.  The bike overall is complete and not really messed (except front fender) with so wasn't sure.

Your research is good and it would appear to be a 1970 model - a DT1C (not a DT250). Is the engine number the same (it would have been originally)?

I wouldn't worry about the tank colour, as previous owners often fitted what was available if an original was lost or damaged. Is the two stroke oil tank on the left hand side the same colour?

Welcome to the forum, from western Oregon. I had a 1970 "C" model 52 years ago. Liked it a lot. Recently acquired a 1971 "E" model, and a 69 "B" model, and am working on the E model and hope to ride it next summer.
Good luck with your project.

Thank you very much for the information about it being a 1970 model - and a DT1C.  Yes, I believe it's the original motor as the frame number matches the engine.

The two stroke oil tank does match the gas tank...  That is why I was wondering if it came in that color or only red for that year.  It's so faded on one side (that was exposed to the sun) It appeared like they were the original tanks.  Was red the only color for 1970?

Possible a customer wanted the 1969 color and dealer swapped tanks... not unheard of.

Other countries had different colors compared to US so it could have been imported from another country by a US serviceman?

Or who knows what could have happened in the last 50 years...

For the US, yes.
