Not DT1 but my RT-1B bought new had that foam pad. Had an electrical issue just after purchase. When the service tech removed the tank that pad was there. I asked what it was for? He said he didn't know for sure but knowing the Japanese they didn't put it there just for fun. I surmise it is for additional support for the tank and mainly to protect the cables and wiring from chafing .

My DT2 has it as well, thought it was something a PO put on but then saw someone else with a DT2 had the same thing so I left it.

Thanks all
i never had one
i noticed that when I close up my man spread that the noise coming from under the tank goes down.  Tank rides on three solid rubber points so I thought it was probably for noise but maybe to reduce tank vibes when low on fuel and perhaps metal fatigue?   Hate to pop a leak

My early bikes have it, including both 68 DT1 bikes. I think Yamaha calls it a “seal” and I noticed the magneto harness plugs into the bike wiring there. So, I surmised it is to help seal those connections against water. That’s my rationale anyway.

The foam used seems to hold water?

Anyway, I always thought it was there to help support tank and dampen vibration.

I've seen one tank that cracked at rear mount and leaked and that one did not have the foam underneath. I know of others that cracked at rear mount but I don't know if they had foam or not.

Maybe others can share experiences.

I have owned and worked on many 1975-1976 MX400’s & YZ400’s and they have the usual front rubber mounting pucks and an additional two more rubber puck isolators mid tank and the rear mounting bracket point stud with a grommet secured by a washer, lock washer and nut, every one I have ever seen the rear bracket is cracked or completely cracked off, granted these particular models were designed to be raced for strictly off road use, they could have probably benefited with some type of foam support, granted these bikes were designed to be replaced after every race season and not still be around 40-50 years later.
