1969 DT250 restoration log was created by fedexin

Greetings all, new member here, happy to be a part of the community. I purchased a 1969 DT250 DT1B non-running but mostly complete and I have everything to learn about 2-stroke engines. I guess not knowing anything means I don't have any bad habits? :)

My son and I are in the disassembly stage of a very dirty bike and I want to use this thread as a restoration log.

Some pics:

okay no pics! The first issue (feature?) we ran into during disassembly was lots of oil in the muffler. We pulled off the springs and tipped over the muffler and oil came running out of the manifold end. Is that normal? Again, I've yet to see this bike start and the entire chassis and engine are covered in oil...

 from Salisbury, UK.

First up, check your engine and frame numbers (hopefully they match) against the numbers in the VIN tables in the Tech Library (see top toolbar). That way you'll know exactly which model you have and won't waste money on the wrong parts!

You will have a DT1 of some sort, not a DT250 - a little pedantic, perhaps, but important to know, for the same reasons as in the paragraph above.

Thank you much for this direction, it is in fact a DT1B! I'm all about pedantry too :)

So, oil pouring out from the muffler (manifold end)... is that normal?

No.

A favourite way to clear these exhausts over in the US is to stick them on a fire or bbq. The exhaust can be repainted once cleared.
