Howdy folks,

Bike has been sitting a while now and came to find out the ignition coil was toast. Tested with a generic 6V battery and checked for OL with a multimeter. Found a similar coil for sale on eBay but I was wondering if it is possible to convert to 12v. I know the magneto makes things more of a PITA but does anybody know of a 12v "winged" swap?

Generally curious because I really don't want to risk a purchase on an untested coil and come to find it also cooked.

MG1T has a magneto ignition.  Does not need a battery for spark.  Ignition coil is technically neither 6 volt or 12 volt.  Should have only one small wire going in to the ignition coil and the large coil wire coming out.  (You must have a later MG1T as early models had the ignition coil under the flywheel on the stator plate)

I've found the Emgo 24-71532 coil www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00230959C works well on the Yamaha magneto systems.  It was recommended years ago on the "old" Yamaha forum as there is a lot of junk out there for sale.  I prefer original but I've never had a problem with this Emgo. 

P.S.  Are you sure your coil is bad?  I'm not sure from your description how you tested it
